Harold C. Conrad, commonly called Hal, President of the Conrad Shoe company, is an Atlantic product, having been born in 1878. Even in boyhood he worked in the store on Saturdays and at odd times and having a natural liking for the shoe business he developed a foundation for a successful business career. Graduating from the Atlantic high school in 1896 he attended Cornell College at Mt. Vernon. This with his early experience eminently fitted him as one of Atlantic's leading merchants.

In December, 1909, he was married to Miss Orpha Lane, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Lane, who have been residents of the county for a good many years. They have one daughter, Lois by name.

The business of which Mr. Conrad is the head was established by his father the late C. C. Conrad, in 1874, and thereby enjoys the distinction of being one of the oldest shoe firms in the state. Upon the death of C. C. Conrad in 1909, the management of the store was taken up by his son, the subject of our sketch. Always being a good business, and enjoying the patronage of many from a long distance around, it is indeed a credit to Mr. Conrad to say that he has substantially increased the volume of business and its efficiency.

Mr. Conrad has the reputation of being one of the best shoe buyers in the state, knowing intimately all of the lines that come to the notice of one well versed in the shoe trade. This enables him to select the very best values and styles obtainable. Particular attention is paid by him and his force of efficient clerks to fitting the feet correctly, and in no small measure has added to the comfort and good disposition of a host of satisfied customers.

As Atlantic has always been the home of Mr. Conrad he has taken more than ordinary interest in its growth and welfare, being ready at all times to put his shoulder to the wheel and help in the up-building of his native town. He is one of the charter members of the Atlantic Commercial Club also of the Iowa State Shoe Dealers' Association. He is a member of the Knights of Pythias and of the Masonic fraternity.
