THE LADIES LITERARY CLUB

BY MRS. MEREDITH.

The first women's club in Atlantic was organized in 1889 and called "The Ladies Literary Club." Mrs. J. N. Wood was its first president. Its object has ever been mental and social improvement--to make good citizens of its members first, then of those with whom they come in contact. The first regular meeting of the club is on the first Tuesday in October and the subsequent meetings are held on every alternate Tuesday until May. The membership is composed chiefly of busy home-keepers. The afternonon [sic afternoon] spent in study and discussion of literature, history, art or whatever may be the theme is a break in the monotonous round of duties, bringing incalculable good to the members. At present we are studying United States, its history and some of its problems, so that in a little while when the ballot comes to us we may use it intelligently.

The membership is limited to eighteen, except at the social meetings, when we serve bountiful dinners, at which time every lady's husband asserts his loyalty to the club and declares himself a member in good standing.
