Bits and Pieces A trotting track was made in July 1875 and everyone claimed he had the fastest horse but the fastest one so far was a M-U-L-E.
The Chicago & northwestern Railroad had their problems in those early days. There were many derailments and accidents that prompted the Arcadia correspondent to write in the Carroll Herald that all criminals sentenced to life imprisonment should be given five free rides on the C. & N.W. and if they’re still alive after these rides they should be allowed to go “scot free.”
This correspondent of the Carroll Herald of 1874 and 1875 went by the pen name of “Double Xity.” There was much discussion of what would be done with this person if his or her identity were ever found out, especially by the “two most conceited businessmen” who constantly made the column. Meanwhile this correspondent kept on writing, criticizing and ridiculing certain members of the town. After this person quit, a new one with the pen name “Sickle” took over and the columns became much less controversial.
April 28, 1875 - Some farmers reported to be planting crops to the middle of the road instead of allowing two rods in width on each side of the line for public highway. Where farmers did this on both sides of the road travelers had to travel over the worked ground.
Three miles south of Arcadia was the location of one of the much traveled “Overland Trails.” Section 33 was one of the last to be broken and the old wagon ruts ran across its entire width. These ruts had been worn into the sod a foot or more deep. These were caused by many settlers moving west in covered wagons known as “Prairie Schooners.” The bows supporting the canvas top were vertical, not slanting fore and aft as the pictures of covered wagons would have us believe.
Photo / Caption. Isacc Newton Voris, the man who could be called the founder of Arcadia, was born in New York in 1830. As a young man he spent several years in Illinois. In 1851 he went to California, where he built and operated a sawmill and grist mill. He returned to New York, was married on New Year’s Day of 1861 and returned to California. All of these journeys were made by way of Panama. In 1870 he returned with his family to New York on the new C & NW Railway. This is the first he saw of our area and was very much impressed with it, so much so that he invested all the savings of his California business in the Arcadia township in February of 1871. He had a townsite platted and this was recorded in Carroll in June of that year. His son, Floyd, was the first baby born in Arcadia township.

I wish to express my gratitude to Mrs. Ronald Berg, Mrs. Leo Berning, Mrs. Lon Diers, Mrs. Robert Schweers, Mrs. Dale Schweers, Mrs. Ronald Sundrup, Mrs. Larry Wolterman and those who assisted them, for the time and effort they put in at compiling this Centennial Book.
They put in many may hours over a period of four months in interviewing people, in going through early record books, in gathering material, in arranging, in typing, etc., and the result is a very interesting and informative history of our parish and community. Through their work many memories are brought back to all of you.
A special thanks to the large number of men and women who gathered ads for this book. Also to Don Badding, General Chairman of the Centennial Celebration, and the many men and women working so zealously with him for the success of the celebration on August 9 and 10 and September 21. ~ Father C.A. Ahmann
