Members of Our Parish Eighty-Four Years or More

Photo / Caption - Mrs. William (Elizabeth) Staiert. Mrs. William (Elizabeth) Staiert was born August 19, 1881, in Mount Carmel. Her parents, Joseph and Bernadine (Olberding) Weber, farmed in that area and a sister, Mrs. H.J. (Bernadine) Kohorst, and a brother, Clem, were born there.

When Mrs. Staiert was five years old, the family moved to a farm northeast of Arcadia. It is the farm now occupied by Mrs. Joe (Mary) Anstoeter, another sister of Mrs. Staiert’s. Besides those mentioned, Elizabeth has another brother, Ben, and sisters, Mrs. Gerhard (Ann) Mueggenberg and Mrs. John (Kate) Bueltel.

Elizabeth tells us her dad was born in Westfalia, Germany, and her mother in Aldenburg, Germany. They came to this country as young people and met and married in Mount Carmel. She tells of her father working to earn money to come to America. And when he got to the States, he had to find work so that he could earn the money to come to Iowa.

Mrs. Staiert tells of her young days when there were vast prairies in every direction. She tells of going to country school and when a bit older, of going to St. John’s in Arcadia. She went to school with Lizzie Ocken and she stayed at the school during the week. She received Solemn Communion in 1894.

After her education, she helped take care of younger brothers and sisters at home.

On February 16, 1909, Elizabeth married William Staiert, son of Augustine and Emilie (Dentlinger) Staiert. He was one of a family of six, having three brothers, Frank, Theodore and John, and two sisters, Anna and Mary.

They moved to a farm southeast of Arcadia and farmed there until November of 1943, when they retired to town. The farm they owned was purchased by Augustine Staiert on November 24, 1873, from the railroad, and therefore has never been in any other name other than Staiert. In order to mark his property, Augustine Staieit planted two cottonwood trees, which stand on the yard to this day. The land is now farmed by Irvin Staiert, a son of William and Elizabeth.

The Staierts raised five children, Mrs. L.T. (Amelia) Wernimont, Mrs. Andrew (Caroline) Nieland (now deceased). Mrs. Albert (Dorothy) Kennebeck, Joe and Irvin There are 29 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren. Mr. Staiert passed away in 1947.

Mrs. Staiert always enjoyed gardening and doing yard work. She also did handwork. She now is residing at St. Anthony’s nursing home in Carroll. She has remained an active church member and is yet enrolled in our Christian Mothers’ Sodality.

Photo / Caption - Conrad Huelshorst. Conrad Huelshorst was born June 13, 1883, in Westphalia, Germany, and at the age of six, came to this country with his parents, Henry and Margaret (Rehker) Huelshorst. Conrad’s two older brothers, Jake and Chris, had come to Arcadia a couple of years earlier than the rest of the family, approximately 1887.

Ed Rehker, a brother of Margaret Huelshorst, assisted the family in securing passage to sail to America. Conrad, being only a small boy, recalls of this journey hughes waves on their long voyage.

The Huelshorst family settled on a farm about one mile east of Arcadia. Conrad grew up there and helped with the farming. He received his schooling in St. John’s school.

On September 14, 1910, Conrad married Lena Bergman in a double wedding with her sister, Mary Bergman and Pete Juergens. The dinner was held at the farm and the reception and dancing was held in large tents.

Lena’s parents, Clem and Josephine (Niehaus) Bergman, farmed northwest of town, the farm presently occupied by Dale Schweers. Besides Lena and Mary there were two other daughters, Mrs. Tom (Elizabeth) Finn and Mrs. August (Florence) Beckman.

Conrad’s brothers and sisters include Jake, Chris, who beam a priest, John, who became Brother Vitalis, Mrs. Adolph (Mary) Kampworth, Mrs. Henry (Anna) Millenacker, Mrs. Joe (Kathryn) Bueltel, Sister Theodosia, and Mrs. Henry (Gertrude) Schroeder.

After their marriage, the young couple took over management of the family farm and Conrad’s parents lived with them until their death. After several years, they moved into a new 10-room home built on their farm by Clem Bergman and Louie Diers.

The Huelshorsts raised five children and had one daughter, Angela, who died in infancy. Their children include Mrs. Henry (Teresa) Berns, Mrs. Ray (Regina) Ludwig, Francis, Vincent and Eugene.

Mrs. Huelshorst passed away in 1942. In 1964, Conrad moved into Arcadia. He is an active parish member and enjoys his fishing days at nearby lakes and rivers.

Photo / Caption - Mrs. Ed Schroeder. On October 5, 1885, Mrs. Ed (Helena) Schroeder was born to Henry and Mary (Pick) Bolke. She was born on a farm southeast of Arcadia. Helena’s grandfather, Arnold Henry Bolke had bought the farm on June 23, 1874. When her father married, the couple continued to live on the farm, where they had two daughters, Helena and Ann, who later married Frank Gerken. Art Gerken, son of Ann and Frank, now occupies the farm place and farms the ground which has been in the family over 100 years.

When Helena was four or five, the family moved to the farm now occupied by the Leonard Venteichers. Her father died shortly thereafter. Her mother continued to live on the farm and the following year married Barney Haverkamp. To this union was born two boys, Ben and Joe.

Mrs. Schroeder tells of her younger days which included walking to school every day no matter what the weather held in store. She went to country school and also to St. John’s. She received solemn communion here in 1898.

After her schooling was finished she stayed at home to help with the farm work and to take are of the smaller family members.

On February 20, 1906, Helena married Edward Schroeder, son of Barney and Kathryn Schroeder, whose farm was directly across the road from the Haverkamps.

They moved one-half mile north to a farm which is now occupied by Robert Schroeder, a grandson.

The Schroeders raised five children, Mrs. William (Rose) Badding, Edmund of Carroll, Lawrence, Art and Joe, now deceased. There are 23 grandchildren and 77 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchildren.

In 1932, Ed built the gas station located near the farm place. They managed that business for many years. In 1940 they moved to their home in Arcadia. Mr. Schroeder passed away March 21, 1955.

Helena has been kept active through the years with gardening and canning the fruits and vegetables from her garden. She makes many quilts during the winter and does lots of embroidering.

Photo / Caption - Mrs. Alphonse (Mayme) Schweers. Mrs. Alphonse (Mayme) Schweers was born on Christmas day in the year 1887. Her parents, Frank and Mary (Ahrling) Scherbring lived on a farm near Breda and when Maybe was four years old, they moved to a farm north of Arcadia.

She is one of a family of ten. Twin sisters born to the Scherbrings died at birth and are buried on St. John’s Cemetery. Four brothers, Herman, Frank, Joe and Henry have passed away. She has a brother, George, living in Colorado. A sister, Mrs. John (Ann) Glass resides in Carroll. Another sister, Mrs. P.J. (Elizabeth) Friedman lives in Humboldt.

Mayme received her schooling in St. John’s school. She received first Solemn Communion at the age of twelve. Having received Solemn Communion, her schooling ended and she then began hiring out to people for housework at a wage of $2.0 per week. Mayme says many times she acted as nurse also. She worked in homes in Arcadia, Vail and Carroll. Also before her marriage, she worked as a waitress at the former Burke Hotel in Carroll.

Mayme remembers helping pick up a crop of potatoes for her dad, which he sold for $250.00. With the money, he was able to buy four pieces of farm equipment, a cultivator, harrow, disc and planter, all horse drawn, of course.

Her marriage to Alphonse Schweers occurred on July 1, 1913. He was a son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Mescher) Schweers. He came to this area at the age of seven. The Joseph Schweers family home was located north of town, the farm place formerly occupied by Greg Schweers. Alphonse had a brother, Herman, and a sister, Mrs. Fred (Cora) Mescher.

When the couple married, they took over operation of the farm. On the place was an apple orchard covering five acres. People from all over the area came every year to pick up windfall apples. Apple cider was made and sold in town. Mrs. Schweers said she did lots of canning and baking, using apples from their orchard.

The Schweers raised five children, four of whom now live in our parish. Rose Marie lives with her mother. Gregory farms north of Arcadia. Mrs. Joe (Georgene) Staiert lives in Carroll. Paul now lives in Arcadia and Louis farm northeast of town. Mrs. Schweers has seventeen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

In 1946, Mr. and Mrs. Schweers moved to a new home in Arcadia. In 1962 Mrs. Schweers passed away.

Mayme is an active church member, belonging to the Christian Mothers’ organization. She keeps busy sewing and making quilts for her grandchildren. She works outside in the spring and summer tending the lawn and garden.

Some of Our Senior Citizens of the Parish

Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Collison - Vincent, son of John and Cora (Maloney) Collison was born March 24, 1904, on the home place 3 1/2 miles south of Arcadia where Milford and Millie Collison now live Originally from Illinois, grandparents Mike and Kate Maloney settled on the farm in 1876. The 160 acre tract of land was given to Mrs. Maloney as a wedding present from a family for whom she worked. A daughter Cora married John Collison and to this union was born seven children, including Vincent, Milford and Marvin.

Vincent married Margaret on August 24, 1927, at St. Peter and Paul Church in Carroll. Margaret, the daughter of Frank and Carolyn (Buchheit) Beiter was born September 1, 1904, and spent her youth in Carroll.

Following their marriage, Vincent and Margaret started farming the farm where they still reside. The parents of three children, Mrs. Leo (Helen) Mayr, Carroll; John of Rockwell City and Mrs. Don (Mary) Boell of Rochester, Minnesota; they have twelve grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Berg - Joe, son of Joseph and Francis (Schlermann) Berg was born July 15, 1900, on the farm his father bought in 1897. Joe’s father and Uncle Ferdinand came to the Arcadia area in 1878 as teenagers and worked as hired men for farmers. Both men died of typhoid pneumonia less than two weeks apart during the 1906 epidemic. Francis, with her children, moved to Maple River until Joe was 20 years old when they returned to the Berg farm.

Joe married Christine Leiting, daughter of the Anton Leitings on January 11, 1928. Christine, born November 5, 1906, has been a parishioner of St. John’s all her life.

They made their home on the Berg home place and raised eight children with one child dying at 18 months of age.

They retired to their new home in Arcadia in 1972.

Christine enjoys gardening, crocheting and sewing. Joe returns to the farm daily for light chores.

Joe and Christine are grandparents of thirty children.

Miss Anna Kramer - Anna was born at Breda July 2, 1892, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Kramer. She came to the Arcadia area 35 years ago. Annie makes her home with Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Jahde.

Mr. and Mrs. Art Diers - Art, son of Aloysius and Anna (Lucas) Diers was born at Arcadia on January 22, 1901. Art was one of six children. Two sisters, Mrs. Henry (Carrie) Schenkleberg and Mrs. Matt (Rose) Bornback have passed away. His brothers, Cyrenus and Leo, live in Arcadia and Gene resides in California.

In his young days, Art helped out on farms in this area. He then worked on a carpenter crew with his dad, who built many homes around Arcadia at that time. At one time, Art helped fix the cross on the steeple of the present church. In 1930, he began working at the Arcadia Elevator, becoming manager, holding that position until 1970 when he retired.

On February 9, 1926, he was married to Loretta Niehaus in St. John’s Church, the marriage performed by Father Berger. Loretta, daughter of Barney and Kathryn (Thiemann) Niehaus, was born April 26, 1906. Her parents and grandparents, Joe and Elizabeth (Warning) Thiemann were long time Arcadia residents. Her grandparents came to Arcadia from Stele, Germany, in April of 1873. Their names are recorded as being early settlers of our Church. Their names, along with George Terlisner, are recorded as having bought the first cemetery lots from the Church.

Loretta’ family included one sister, Mrs. Joe (Mayme Scheberding, brothers Frank, William and Henry, all deceased, and Leo, living in California. Their family farm was located north of town where the Leon Bierls now live.

Loretta and Art both received their schooling in St. John’s school. Loretta boarded with the Sisters during the winter, and walked the distance during good weather.

The Niehaus family moved into Arcadia in 1918, and the tornado of that year destroyed the home and it to be rebuilt. Mr. and Mrs. Diers make their home in that house today.

The Diers have raised three children, Mrs. Daryl (Inez) Winker of Carroll, Don and Lon of this parish. They have thirteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Art and Loretta keep active with gardening, like to travel and enjoy fishing trips. Mrs. Diers does lots of handwork, sewing and crocheting. She also likes to play cards and they are both active in the A.M.M. Club. He has served on the school board, Church committees, and still serves as town clerk of Arcadia.

Herman Olberding - On November 7, 1899, Herman was born to Herman and Caroline (Osterhaus) Olberding. His parents were raised in Germany and came to this area from Dyersville sometime around 1890. They settled on a farm east of Arcadia and this is where Herman was born and now resides with his sister Loretta.

Mrs. Albert Hannasch - Margaret Hannasch was born March 29, 1903, the daughter of Peter and Mary (Meisheid) Eischeid of Halbur. On February 26, 1924, she married Albert Hannasch of Roselle. They moved to the Arcadia area in 1929, farming till 1938 when they bought and operated the cafe in Arcadia for eight years. From retirement, in 1947, to his death in 1964, Albert with the exception of several years, worked as a Supervisor for Carroll County.

Albert and Margaret had four daughters and a son who died at age one.

Margaret is very active in St. John’s quilting circle, crochets, sews for her children and grandchildren and enjoys cards.

Margaret has eighteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Niehaus - Henry was born on June 30, 1897, the son of Henry and Anna (Nacke) Niehaus. He was eight months old when he came to live on the farm he was to spend his life. Farming the land until retiring ten years ago, son Ralph now tends the farm.

On November 22, 1920, Henry married Elizabeth, daughter of Herman and Caroline (Osterhaus) Olberding. Like Henry, Elizabeth spent her entire life in the Arcadia area being baptized, schooled and married in St. John’s parish. Elizabeth does her own housework and spends time embroidering.

The parents of eight children, five are living, Leroy, Arlene, Mary Ann, Roland and Ralph. They have seventeen grandchildren.

Having been married fifty-four years, Henry and Elizabeth celebrated their Golden Anniversary in 1970. Family and friends attended Mass and an open house in their honor.

Mrs. Louis Schroeder - On August 20, 1896, Hannah was born to Anton and Elizabeth (Leiting) Pille. The Pille family home was the farm where Elmer Noelk now lives. She married Louis Schroeder on January 29, 1918, and they farmed south of Arcadia many years. They raised nine children with six being members of St. John’s Parish.

In 1956, Louis and Hannie moved into Arcadia, across from St. John’s Church.

Their golden wrong anniversary was observed in 1968 with an open house given in their honor by their children. Many relatives and friends attended the celebration.

Louis passed away on September 29, 1973.

Hannie enjoys her garden and likes to sew and quilt. She also does much crocheting and knitting for her children.

Hannie is grandmother of 35 grandchildren and has eight great-grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. William Hannasch - Bill was born April 1899 in Roselle, the son of William and Caroline (Luehrs) Hannasch. He married Addie Schlermann, daughter of Frank and Mary (Anstoeter) Schlermann of Mount Carmel. They were married in Maple River on February 26, 1934. .

They spent the first three years of married life in Maple River, moving to Arcadia in 1939. They lived just north of Arcadia until 1958 when they moved into their present home.

Bill worked as a carpenter all his life and in retirement enjoys fishing and playing cards.

Addie, besides making a home for their children, Dale, Ronald and Carol, also worked for several years at Bohnenkamp grocery and from 1960 until 1974 she worked for St. John’s school lunch program. Addie enjoys gardening, reading and watching T.V.

Bill and Addie have eight grandchildren.

Mrs. Joe Kohorst - Mary, daughter of Ferdinand and Mary (Neiland) Steinkamp was born at Breda on May 21, 1903. On September 22, 1925, she married Joe Kohorst, son of J.H. and Bernadine (Weber) Kohorst. They farmed north of Arcadia on the farm bought by Joe’s grandfather, Gerhard H., in 1890. In 1900 it was sold to Joe’s father, J.H. and in 1939 Joe bought the farm. Son Vernon purchased the land in 1973 and is the fourth generation to farm the land.

In September of 1963, Joe and Mary retired to their new home in Arcadia. Joe passed away in February of 1974.

Parents of four children, the family includes three daughters, Celene Mae of Minnesota and Jean and Betty of Westside.

Always loving to work outside on the farm, Mary enjoys her flowers in town. She keeps active visiting her children and sometimes babysitting with her grandchildren.

Peter Schmitz - Pete, son of Henry and Johanna Schmitz, was born at Carroll on August 16, 1885. He received his education at Holy Angels Parish of Roselle. On October 18, 1911, he married Mary Hugeback and they farmed for some time north of Halbur.

Coming to the Arcadia area, they farmed 1/2 mile north of Arcadia for 38 years, after which he bought the Hardware and Implement business from the late J.H. Kohorst. Mr. Schmitz retired in 1957.

The Schmitzes raised eight children, Mrs. Leonard (Florentine) Rupiper, Mrs. Leonard (Agnes) Rupiper, Lawrence, Mrs. Albert (Marie) Speyer, Lewis, Leo, Mrs. Leon (Bartilla) Andersen and Mrs. Howard Berger. They have 21 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Schmitz passed away September 18, 1973.

Mr. Schmitz keeps active doing yard work. In winter he dries his tractor and keeps the yard clear of snow.

Mrs. Otto Greteman - Alma, the daughter of August and Emma (Kusel) Hansen was born January 29, 1898, on the farm where she lives. She moved to Manning with her folks for fifteen years. Alma did sewing for other people and at one time worked as a receptionist for a dentist in Manning

On December 22, 1922 she married Otto Greteman and returned to the farm.

Their daughter, Virginia, with her husband Forrest Wiese, now live on the daily farm with her. Alma also has two stepdaughters, Dorothy Testroet of Halbur and Marian Stoffers of California, and thirteen grandchildren.

Mrs. Wayne Duffy - Mary was born on Christmas Day, 1903, the daughter of Henry and Mathilda (Berning) Buchholz of Arcadia. Mary was baptized, schooled and married in St. John’s Parish.

On February 26, 1924, she married Wayne Duffy of Vail and raised four children: Orville, Jean, Charles and Donna.

Always Arcadia residents, in 1943, they purchased the home where Mary was born and still resides.

Wayne was for many years janitor of St. John’s, retiring shortly before his death August 15, 1972.

In recent years, Mary has been in charge of cooking duties at the American Legion in Arcadia. Mary’s time is spent gardening, canning, quilting and crocheting.

Mrs. Katharine Bueltel - Katharine, daughter of Joseph and Caroline (Olberding) Weber, was born October 9, 1894, at the farm place north of Arcadia. She is one of eight children. On October 26, 1920, she married John Bueltel of Halbur and they farmed north of Arcadia. Mr. Bueltel died in 1934. A son, Clarence, now tends the farm. Another son, Vernis, lives in Omaha.

Mrs. Bueltel’s hobbies are gardening, quilting and handwork.

Wolfgang Weitzer - Born in Himmelreich, Germany, on April 10, 1883. Wolfgang came to Matton, Illinois, in 1913. He lived there five years before moving to Roselle on a farm, and then living in the Glidden and Dedham areas.

Wolfgang married Kate Wurzer in 1922 at St. Peter and Paul’s Church in Carroll.

Moving to Arcadia in 1950, Wolfgang worked for many area farmers. His wife died September 6, 1958.

Wolfgang maintains a big garden and does his own yard work.

Mrs. Joseph (Mary) Anstoeter - Mary was born September 20, 1896, a daughter of Joe and Caroline (Olberding) Webber. She was born on the farm where she now resides, leaving only for two years when her parents moved to town for a short time. Her parents had moved to that farm in 1886 from Mt. Carmel.

On February 6, 1923, she married Joseph Anstoeter and they had one daughter, Mary Teresa, who with her husband, Marvin Hoffman, live on the family farm with her mother. Mrs. Anstoeter’s hobbies are reading and fancywork.

Mrs. Ben Leiting - Caroline Leiting, daughter of Joe and Mary (Lemker) Sanders of Maple River was born January 4, 1901, baptized in Breda and attended Breda school. On January 9, 1923, Carrie married Ben Leiting, son of the Anton Leitings and rented the farm now owned by Mrs. Bert Vonnahme for thirteen years. In 1936 they purchased from the estate of Anton Leiting the land they farmed until moving to Arcadia in 1963. Ben passed away on May 19, 1969. Ben and Carrie had ten children, eight surviving.

Carrie enjoys working with her hands quilting, fancywork and visiting with her thirty-nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Anton Steinkamp - Mr. and Mrs. Anton Steinkamp are natives of Carroll County. Mr. Steinkamp was born at Breda and Mrs. Steinkamp at Arcadia. She is the former Mary Kohorst, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Henry Kohorst.

They were married in St. John’s Church fifty years ago on February 4, 1925. After their marriage they farmed in the Breda area for fifteen years. They have lived on their present farm, which was purchased from John Rehker, for the last 35 years. Mary and Tony have one daughter, Bonnie.

Mr. and Mrs. Cyrenus Diers - Cyrenus, son of Mr. and Mrs. Aloysius Diers, lives in the family where he was born on July 2, 1905. A carpenter all his life, Cyrenus built or remodeled many homes and buildings in the area.

On August 14, 1940, Cyrenus married Hyacinth, daughter of Frank and Mary (Olberding) Ennenbach. Hyacinth was born August 12, 1913, and was raised on a farm east of Arcadia.

Cyrenus and Hyacinth have three children, Diane, Robert and Randy and five grandchildren.

Now semi-retired, Cyrenus and his wife enjoy their leisure hours gardening.

Matilda Dentlinger - Tillie, daughter of John and Theresia (Radke) Dentlinger, was born February 23, 1905, at the family farm south of Arcadia. She received her schooling in St. John’s grade school and attended St. Angela Academy where she took home economics courses.

For twenty-six years she has been head cook in the St. John’s hot lunch program. She spends many hours doing yard work, gardening and taking care of her flowers. Tillie with her sister Mary have lived in their Arcadia home for fifty-five years.

John “Hans” Noethe - John was born on November 6, 1903, to Frank and Kathryn Noethe. John’s parents farmed in the Arcadia area and as a young man John lived where the Stanley Schroeders now live. He attended St. John’s school and in 1929 moved near Westside to live and farm with his brother Francis.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Beckman - On January 7, 1975, Ann and Henry Beckman noted fifty years of marriage. The Golden Anniversary was celebrated with family and friends at Holy Mass and an open house.

Henry was born June 3, 1891, in Germantown, Illinois. He came to the Carroll County area in 1915.

Ann was born February 11, 1902, in Arcadia, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Schwabe. Shortly after birth they moved to Breda. Ann attended school in Mount Carmel.

On January 7, 1925, Ann and Frank were married at Maple River. They moved to the Arcadia vicinity and farmed until 1947 when they moved to their present home.

Mr. and Mrs. Beckman have six children and thirty-three grandchildren. They enjoy gardening as a hobby.

Mr. and Mrs. George Ricke - George, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Ricke, was born at Breda on June 17, 1902. Rose, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Derner, was born March 17, 1894, also at Breda. They were married on November 25, 1924, and recently celebrated their Golden Anniversary with a family celebration, and open house. They farmed near Breda for a few years and then moved to a farm south of Arcadia, where they lived until moving to their new home in Arcadia in 1968. Their son, Ralph, now does the farming and George travels to the farm most every day to do yard work. They have another son, Richard, and a daughter, Esther. They have eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Rose does quilting and her own sewing and tends a large garden.

Mary Dentlinger - Born in Carroll on May 24, 1889, Mary with her parents John and Theresia (Radke) Dentlinger, moved to a farm southwest of Arcadia in 1897.

Mary spent 25 years making a home for her brother Father O.A. Dentlinger. They lived in Sac City, Milford, Manson and Con Rapids. After Father’s death, she was employed by many area people caring for sick and elderly. Before making her home with sister Tillie in Arcadia, she was employed by Mrs. Clara Masching of Carroll.

Mary enjoys spending her time outside gardening and growing flowers.

Mrs. Herman Schrad - Margaret, daughter of Joe and Catherine (Huelshorst) Bueltel of Halbur, was born May 1, 1898. She married Herman Schrad, son of Frank and Magdaline (Hoelcher) Schrad on January 20, 1920. Their farm south of Arcadia has been in the family many years, having lived there herself 55 years. Her son, Ivan, now farms the land. Another son, Kenneth, lives in Omaha, and a daughter, Lois, in California. Herman died in 1967. Hobbies include gardening, quilting and the making of rosaries, many given to the missions.

Mr. and Mrs. Louis Henkenius - Louis, son of William and Bernadine (Niehaus) Henkenius, was born December 20, 1904, on the farm where he still resides. His parents came from New Vienna with his father settling on the Henkenius farm in 1885. William and Bernadine were married in St. John’s Church in 1892.

Louis and Louise were married in Roselle on November 3, 1932. Louise was born December 6, 1906, the daughter of William and Mary (Kohorst) Taphorn of Roselle. They spent their married life farming the family farm two miles northwest of Arcadia.

The parents of eight children, they are grandparents to 24 grandchildren.

Louis is now retired from farming and Louise is kept busy with her hobbies of sewing, crocheting and gardening.

Mrs. Frank Pille - Daughter of Henry and Agnes (Toph) Rust, Martha was born on June 20, 1896, and baptized at St. John’s. At age two the family moved to Crawford County, returning to farm in Arcadia township in 1912.

On November 25, 1919, Martha married Frank Pille, son of Anthony and Elizabeth (Leiting) Pille in Maple River. They farmed east of Arcadia until 1952 when they retired to Arcadia. Martha’s husband Frank died in 1959.

The parents of four children, two survive, Joan of Riceville and Virgil of Ames. Mart has ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Schmitz - Halbur residents from birth, “Fritz” and Barbara were married in Halbur on February 22, 1922, by Father Lambert Schenkleberg.

Theodore, the son of Peter and Mary Schmitz, was born June 22, 1896. Barbra, born October 17, 1902, is the daughter of Peter William and Mary (Janning) Schenkleberg.

In 1925 they moved to Arcadia where Fritz went into the barbering business. He owned the pool hall until 1930 when he bought the present building known as “Smitty's Tap.” Their son Elmer operates the tavern with Fritz going to work every day.

Fritz belonged to the volunteer firemen in Arcadia and is an active member of the American Legion having been honored for twenty-five years service as bugler for the Legion Honor Guard.

Barbara has been a member of Christian Mothers and Catholic Daughters and enjoys laying cards. She tends a big garden and makes a home for daughter Marian and son Eugene (Butch). Other family members include sons Jack and Clair and daughter Jane, 18 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

In February 1972, the couple was honored at a dinner and reception to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Many relatives and friends attended the happy occasion.

Mrs. John Muenchow - Georgia (Ford) Muenchow was born May 17, 1904, in Ankeny, Iowa, daughter of George and Margaret (Conley) Ford.

She attended grade school and graduated from high school at Redfield. She attended Cornell College in Mt. Vernon. She then taught school at Klemme, Iowa, and then in Arcadia public school.

who was a native of Chicago, Illinois. His birthdate was November 24, 1901. John had opened Muenchow Welding and Machine shop in 1921. They raised two children, Jon of this parish and Josephine of St. Joseph, Missouri. One granddaughter completes the family.

Mr. Meunchow passed away in 1973, having served as Mayor of Arcadia from 1965 to 1973.

Georgia served as postmistress in Arcadia for many years, having been appointed in April of 1937. On March 1, 1969, she retired her post. She now resides at the Carroll Health Center in Carroll.

Mrs. Ben Haverkamp - Elvira, daughter of John H. and Pauline (Bunker) Schroeder was born April 4, 1901, in a home located where the Anstoeter home stands across from the church. Her father was one of the first teachers in Arcadia’s parochial school.

On November 25, 1919, she married Ben Haverkamp, son of Barney and Mary (Pick) Haverkamp. They farmed south of town and in 1950 built a new home a mile west of the home place.

Elvira and a son, Merton, still reside there as Ben died in 1969. Other children include Armella, Donnabelle and Marjean; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Haverkamp enjoys crocheting, quilting and sewing.

Mr. and Mrs. James Quinn - Jay, son of James and Bredget (Prendergast) Quinn was born May 4, 1897, at Streator, Illinois. Jay has seven brothers and three sisters, Tom, John, Bernard, Charley, Bob, who is a Monsignor, Mrs. Leo (Margaret) Arendorfer, and Mr. Ed (Julie) Goche. Joe, Bill and Mrs. Frank (Madelaine) Latimer are deceased.

At the age of nine, Jay, with his family, moved to Cylinder, Iowa, where his father farmed. In 1917 the family moved to Bancroft. Shortly thereafter, Jay entered military service. After his tour of duty, he journeyed back to Bancroft to join his folks on the family farm.

On August 18, 1931, Jay married Florence Olberding of this parish. Her birthday is October 13, 1905. Her parents, Henry and Catharine (Terlisner) Olberding were long time residents of Arcadia. Florence’s grandparents George and Anna (Warning) Terlisner are numbered among early settlers of St. John’s Church. George Terlisner and Joe Thiemann are recorded as having bought the first cemetery lots of our church at a cost of $10.00. They came to Arcadia from Germany in the spring of 1873. George Terlisner worked on the railroad as a section hand. Their home was located on the site of the William Leiting residence.

Florence had a brother, Herman, who died at Camp Dodge in a flu epidemic during World War I.

Her sisters include Mrs. Paul (Bernadine) Rust, Mrs. Matt (Elizabeth) Bauer, deceased, Mrs. Leo (Clara) Determan, deceased, and Mrs. Harry (Hildegarde) Hass.

Florence’s mother died in 1910, at the age of 35, leaving youngsters to be cared for by Mr. Olberding. In 1920, he built a new home, which today is the Quinn home.

Florence received her schooling in Arcadia, receiving Solemn Communion here. After her education was complete, she stayed home to keep house for her dad.

Since their marriage, the Quinns have farmed north of Arcadia. They have raised one daughter, Mary, deceased, and have two grandsons. The Quinns are active church members and keep active tending a big garden.

Mr. and Mrs. William Leiting - Bill was born March 31, 1905, on the family farm south of Arcadia now owned by Loren Leiting. His parents were Anton and Christine (Wiemelt) Leiting. On April 9, 1929, he married Helen Brightwell, the daughter of Hayden and Ida (Dean) Brightwell.

Helen was born in Monona County and spent her youth at Huron, South Dakota, coming back to Iowa in 1925.

Bill and Helen farmed a number of years before moving to Arcadia in 1936. Bill spent 25 years as a patrol operator for Carroll County. In retirement Bill enjoys playing cards and watching T.V.

Helen has been an employee of various businesses in Arcadia for thirty years. She is presently employed several afternoons a week at Diers Grocery. Her spare time is spent sewing and doing yard work.

The parents of four children, three survive, Helen of Vail, Connie of Breda and Melvin of Carroll. Son Floyd died in April 1973.

Mrs. Frank Killeen - Josephine Bock was born in Denison on June 2, 1882. She lived there with her parents until February 22, 1906, when she married Frank Killeen. They lived north of Westside on the Pendergrast farm when they were first married. They then moved nearer to town on the old Killeen farm. They farmed all their lives and raised six children. Arnold, Melvin, Loren, Eldora, Laverna and Charles Leslie (deceased). There are 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Mr. Killeen is deceased and Josephine now lives at the Carroll Health Center.

Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Booth - Mr. Booth, son of Richard and Josephine (Cooney) Booth was born in the home where he now lives. He and his wife, Mary, daughter of Joseph and Mary Wiederhold, have farmed there since their marriage on February 15, 1916. The abstract on their farm reads 1885.

Gene has raised cattle and horses all his farming years. Mary was always a good seamstress and made wedding dresses for young brides.

Mr. and Mrs. Booth raised two children, Robert (deceased) and Marjorie of Davenport. They have four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Anna Vonnahme - Anna Wegman was born November 28, 1879, by Breda. Anna married John Vonnahme of Mount Carmel February 28, 1905, in Breda and moved to their farm by Arcadia in January 1916.

Mr. and Mrs. Vonnahme had six children. Anna’s husband, John, died November 1943.

Mrs. John Schroeder Sr. - Mrs. Stella Schroeder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Muenchow was born on April 5, 1903, in Chicago. In 1921, Mr. and Mrs. Muenchow moved their family to Arcadia where Mr. Muenchow opened up the Blacksmith Shop.

Stella Muenchow married John Schroeder on August 11, 1925. They moved to their farm right south of the Elevator where they lived and raised their seven children. John passed away on August 19, 1959.

Stella then moved into her present residence in town and she enjoys needlepoint, reading and likes to travel.

Mrs. Henry Kroeger - Maggie was born on April 26, 1884, in Remsen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jon Erdman. When Maggie was three months old, her parents moved to Arcadia where her father worked as a blacksmith.

Maggie married Henry Kroeger on February 5, 1914, in Templeton by her uncle, Father Erdman. They spent their married life farming in the Arcadia vicinity. They retired to her present home in Westside in 1948, and Henry passed away in 1961.

Maggie does a lot of sewing and likes to keep her hands busy.
