Even before a resident priest was located here, a parochial school had been built and opened under the direction of Father Urbany of Carroll, who held divine services here during the years 1880 and 1881. During 1881, the school was opened. It was conducted by lay teachers for the first seven years, with Mr. John Rauch being the first teacher. Miss Anna Middendorf succeeded Mr. Rauch and taught during the years 1884 and 1885. The next teacher was Mr. John H. Schroeder until 1888.

Father Joseph Hellrigl, seeing the need of a larger and better church moved the original frame church to the southwest corner of the premises to be used for a school. The first frame school was moved and joined to the old church for a Sisters’ home.
Father Hellrigle applied for Sisters from Dubuque and according to reliable sources they came here for the first time in 1888. This initial group consisted of Sister Mary Leonarda Rottler, superior, Sister Mary Laurentia Fitzgerald, and Sister Mary Armella Schwind.
The old frame church having been changed toa schoolhouse in 1893 was used until the present school was erected in 1924.

The need of a new school and convent was always alive in the minds of the people. Even though a new church had been completed scarcely two years previous, plans for the new school and convent were being prepared during the first three months of 1923. The plans were submitted to the individual members of the parish by the pastor and committee and all were given an opportunity to express their opinion in writing for or against the construction of the new building. Over 80% of the members approved of the plans and voted in favor of beginning without delay. In response to this, bids for the construction of the new school and convent were obtained. About the 20th of August 1923, excavation for the basement was started, this being done by the members of the parish. With the exception of a few, all members assisted with a willing hand to perform such labor not included in the construction contract. The contract for the building was awarded to Mr. Otto Neitge of Mankato, Minnesota, his bi being over $5,000.00 lower than all others.

The basement up to ground level was completed the same year. Early in March 1924, work was resumed on the superstructure. On Palm Sunday, April 13, the cornerstone for the new school was laid by Very Rev. Stephan Butler of Carroll. The construction proceeded without any delay, so that both school and convent were ready to be occupied September 1, at the opening of the school year.
The new school was dedicated by Most Rev. Edmund Heelan Bishop of Sioux City, October 7 of the same year. The new building is constructed of rough faced brick, containing a variety of colors. The total cost of it does not exceed $40,000.00. The school had accommodations for over 150 pupils. Five school rooms, two music rooms, two dormitories for boarding pupils and an auditorium with a capacity to seat over 400 persons occupied all the space in the basement of the school.
The auditorium was fully equipped with all requirements for home talent plays and school programs. A special kitchen in the basement of the convent was used to prepare meals at social affairs. The convent had accommodations for seven Sisters. Both school and convent were modern throughout.
School day memories of some of our older parish members are the days in the spring when school was dismissed for a few weeks so the children could help prepare the fields for planting. In the fall there were usually three weeks of vacation for corn husking and harvesting.
The formal opening of the Auditorium and a program by the pupils of St. John’s took place November 9, 1924. Sister Mary Jolenta noted one week of school vacation due to sickness in 1929, due to Smallpox, but no other cases were reported.
The country children often boarded at the school during the winter months. Many also remember the bobsled rides to school and church when younger. About fifty-five years ago, four girls walking to school from southeast of Arcadia decided to spend the day in a large culvert east of Arcadia instead. About 25 years ago, the excitement at school was the first in a small building outside. Two boys were throwing firecrackers into the small building and the Sears catalog caught on fire. It was put out with two buckets of water, but no one seems to remember the two boys out for recess for a while afterward! Of course they caught boys smoking in those days, too, only it was cornsilk cigarettes.

In 1973, St. John’s School consolidated with St. Ann’s of Vail to form the Arcadia-Vail Parochial School with three grades in the Vail Center and five grades in the Arcadia Center.

St. John’s Sports Activities St. John’s grades school has had many successful years in sporting events. When Father Ahmann came in 1956, he organized baseball and basketball teams. The first trophy was won in 1957 when the baseball team was Parochial League Champions. Since that time, fifteen trophies have been added.

In 1953, ten parishes of Carroll County joined in a united effort to begin a central Catholic High School to be located in Carroll and which would be called Kuemper High School. The ten parishes were St. John, Arcadia; Sts. Peter and Paul, St. Lawrence, and St. Joseph of Carroll; St. Joseph, Dedham; St. Augustine, Halbur; Holy Family, Lidderdale; St. Francis, Maple River; Holy Angels, Roselle; and St. Mary, Willey. Father Leo Lenz was appointed by Bishop Jos. M. Mueller to organize the effort and to be the first Superintendent.
In 1954 construction of the new high schools was started. In September 1954, Kuemper High school began operating with classes limited to the former St. Angela Academy building until the new part was completed, and the first graduating class was in May 1955. Twenty-seven St. John’s students numbered in this first graduating class.
In later years, Mount Carmel, Templeton and Vail joined the Kuemper corporation. Father Thomas M. Donahoe is the present, Superintendent. Victor Tomka of St. John is presently a member of the Kuemper board of directors.
