Richard B. Schmidt, Sr., age 96, of rural Joice, Iowa, passed away peacefully in to the arms of his Lord, Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, April 16, 2012, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ventura, Iowa, with Rev. Daird Korth officiating. Burial will take place at St. John's Cemetery, rural Ventura. Visitation will be on Sunday, April 15, 2012, from 4-7 PM at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street in Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Family request that memorials be directed to Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Richard Berthold Schmidt, Sr., was born on October 6, 1915, on the farm in rural Miller, Iowa, to parents Otto Rudolph and Bertha Emilia (Jass) Schmidt. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church and attended St. John's Parochial school through the 8th grade. In the late 1940's, Richard farmed his Rice Lake farm where he put his heart and soul in to raising corn and beans, milking cows and raising pigs and steers.

Richard married [August 18, 1939] Ruby Mikesh and had seven children together. On December 2, 1954, Richard was united in marriage with Deloris Irene Olson [Oleson] at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ventura. The couple made their home farming in rural Joice. Deloris passed away on March 17, 2008, in Salem, Arkansas, where the couple enjoyed spending their winters.

Richard was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church from 1915 until 1930, and helped build Redeemer Lutheran in 1947. He had been a faithful member for over 50 years. His hobbies included golfing, fishing, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his children, Mavis Schmidt of Northwood; IA, Janelle (Marvin) Dryden of Honolulu, HI; Joe (Joanna) Schmidt of Kensett, IA; step-daughter, Kathryn Miller of Mason City, IA; step-son, Larry (Janie) Dietrich of Ava, MO; grandchildren, Charles Gooch, Anthony Miller, Amanda (Bruce) Waddington, Jenny (Stefan) Miller, Chris (Dan) Dietrich, Jody (Erich) Muehlegger, Emily (Matt) Montgomery, Jeremy (FuCun) Schmidt, Jacque (Jason) Larsen, Melody Schmidt, Joe Dietrich, Jeff Schmidt, Cindy Lavin, Jordyn Schmidt, Jasmyn Schmidt, Jenna Schmidt; along with several great-grandchildren; numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; spouse Deloris Schmidt; four sons, Lynn Elliot Schmidt in 1963, Richard Berthold Schmidt, Jr. in 2007, and two in infancy; a granddaughter, Julie Schmidt. Richard was the last of 13 children; he was preceded by his seven brothers and six sisters.
