Charlotte Hazel Lewis, the daughter of Chance and Hazel (Clark) Lewis, was born October 16, 1929, at Panora, IA. She lost both her parents at a young age and moved to the Klemme/Garner areas where she lived with various foster families. These years were very formative years for her in her dreams for her future life foot steps. Charlotte attended Klemme area schools and graduated from Klemme High School.
Charlotte later married her high school sweetheart Charles "Charlie" George Christie at the Immanuel Reformed UCC Church in Klemme in 1948. The couple's union was blessed with three sons: Jesse, Max and Bill. Charlotte and Charlie farmed and raised their boys on the farm west of Klemme. Not afraid of the tasks of the farm, Charlotte worked diligently along side of Charles in all aspects of the farming operations, be it driving machinery, caring for the animals, or many of the other chores involved in farming. Charles also was employed in various other jobs off the farm, but nothing slipped through the cracks, as Charlotte was a meticulous and knowledgeable manager of the farm, be it bookkeeping duties, reviewing the farm production, or formulating new and more efficient methods of whatever the task at hand may be. Her clever and intuitive mind was always thinking of new ways of making things better.
Charlotte was a loving partner to Charlie, nurturing mother to her sons, and doting and proud grandma and great grandma. She truly relished any and every opportunity and occasion to be in the presence of her family. Every moment in her 88 years of life was lived to the fullest. The memories and adventure that she created alongside her grandkids are priceless. they loved to go on fishing excursions which not only meant catching fish, but most certainly there would be other priceless and wonderful memories created as part of the outings. Charlotte loved trying new things and had even rode on at a Harley motorcycle in her 80's. Charlotte was always willing to be there for her family and pick them up and surround them with loving and caregiving in their life struggles.
Her family will reflect back on her love for the livestock and other animals, a favorite of which was her many quarter horses that she owned and raised though out the years. She will also be remember for her creative and artistic side as she had created many one of a kind keepsake Pipestone Clay sculptures, handcrafted quilts, and other items with her loving hands for her family and friends. Charlotte was a very proficient painter and had made countless signs for political campaigns, area farmsteads, businesses, vehicles, and entities. She was also know far and wide for her hand painted horse pins and cut outs that family members have collected along with others for keepsakes. She was an ardent Democrat and actively supported countless politicians over the years. He family recalls riding alongside her in many parades in support of the many political figures and she would help with logistics and schedules surrounding their visits and events. Charlotte had met President Obama, Berkley Bedell, was a supporter and friend of the Harkins, and campaigned for countless others.
She had traveled to various places including Washington, D.C. and Alaska. Charlotte enjoyed people and never met a stranger. In addition to being a part of the Democratic support groups, she had been involved on the "Kitchen Cabinet Committee", and area Farm Widow group, and was matriarch of the Christie family. She liked the Opportunity Village Organization and gave of herself in support of it over the years.
The loss of her son Jesse to cancer as a result of Agent Orange infliction October 7, 1989, and sudden and unexpected death of husband Charlie on January 23, 1994, brought not only the pain of the loss to her life and the rest of the family, but like so many other obstacles and challenges that she had dealt with these losses brought a renewed spirit in her as well as she focused her attentions on alternative medicine and caring passionately in the fight against cancer, as she devoted much of her time as a volunteer for the organization, "People Against Cancer", driving several days per week from Klemme to Otho, IA.
In more recent times Charlotte became a fame of UFC and would often times call to let her family know when her favorite fighter was going to be on T.V.
Those who had the privilege of crossing her life foot steps will remember her zest for all that life had to offer, her passion for the many causes she believed in, and her love for her family. Her wit, unique humor, and view of the world were one of a kind. She had a great knack for diffusing situations and some terrific one of a kind one liners and sayings. She had many angel friends and loved and cherished them all.
