Born in Clarion, Iowa on July 28, 1924, to Faye Schroeder Meredith and Harold E. Speight, she graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa. She attended Drake University in Des Moines, where she served as art editor for the yearbook and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Patty worked at Better Homes and Gardens magazine as a copy editor, and was a hostess (flight attendant) with Trans World Airlines (TWA) before marrying George in 1947. Patty's main job and mission in life was raising her five boys and one girl. The family moved to Dallas, TX in 1955 when George started a new job at Texas Instruments. They relocated to Austin in 1971. Patty enjoyed traveling with her husband during retirement to many global locations such as Russia, Norway, China, Europe, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Alaska and Hawaii. She had a great affinity for connecting with others and once won a prize for meeting the most people on a large cruise ship.

A short graveside service at Austin Memorial Park will follow the church service at First English Lutheran Church, 3001 Whitis Avenue, on June 9, 2018 at 2 pm. The family wishes to thank the staff at Legacy Oaks Assisted Living and Hospice Austin for their loving care of our mother. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First English Lutheran Church or National Alliance on the Mentally Ill (NAMI/Austin).
