May 2, 1885 --- January 6, 1968

Fred Nickolas Knudsen, 82 years of age, a life-long resident of the Kanawha area, passed away at the Belmond Community Hospital following a lingering illness, Saturday, January 6, 1968. Mr. Knudsen was born May 2, 1885 near Kanawha and and was the son of Peter and Bertha Knudsen. He received his education in the Kanawha Schools and attended Humboldt Institute and Ellsworth College. He married Sadie Newell on December 6, 1913, in Lebanon, Indiana.

Mr. Knudsen was in the banking business and later in the insurance and real estate business. He was an active member of the Methodist Church of Kanawha, Iowa. He belonged to the Masonic lodge and was a member of the Shrine. Mr. Knudsen was very active in community affairs, serving on the town council for 14 years and was school treasurer for a period of 25 years. He was an early developer of the hybrid seed corn and was secretary of the Northern Iowa Experimental Association for over 30 years. He was active in the Boy Scout organization and more recently helped promote the Kanawha nursing home.

He is survived by his wife, Sadie, of Kanawha; one son, Lewis Knudsen of Bloomington, Minn.; two grandchildren, Lewis, Jr. and Tom; and one sister, Mrs. H. L. Baker of Des Moines, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant daughter, and one sister, Mrs. Fred Trenary.
