BELMOND -- Mavis Peterson, age 85, of Belmond and Goodell, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at Mill Pond Senior Living in Ankeny. Funeral services for Mavis Peterson will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014, at the United Methodist Church in Goodell. Pastor Mike Shaffer will officiate. Burial will be in the Amsterdam Cemetery near Goodell. Visitation for Mavis Peterson will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2014, at Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane South in Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Mavis, the daughter of John and Galya Walkner Schisel, was born May 5, 1928, in Titonka. At an early age Mavis’ family moved to Garner. It was there she grew up and attended school. Mavis graduated from Garner High School in 1946. Mavis moved to New York City, for a short time, then returned to Garner where she worked for the Garner School Superintendent.

Mavis was united in marriage to John Peterson on February 22, 1948, in Garner, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Goodell area for many years. In 1977, John and Mavis built an acreage south of Goodell. They lived there until moving in Belmond in 1999. John passed away in 2010. After John’s death, Mavis lived at the Belmond Rehabilitation Center and was living at the Mill Pond Senior Living in Ankeny at the time of her death.

Mavis was a housewife/mother and partner with John in their farming operation. Mavis volunteered as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. She worked part-time as a nurse aid at the Kanawha Community Home. Mavis was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Goodell and the American Legion Auxiliary in Goodell. Mavis was devoted to her family and enjoyed the time she spent with her grandchildren the most.

Mavis is survived by her children, Betty Hadley (Kevin) of Rowan, Cindy Fletcher (Jim) of Altoona, Ron Peterson of San Angelo, Texas, eight grandchildren, Gene Waage, Beth (Terry Hatfield) Waage, Dustin Waage, Kyle Hadley, Wyatt (Kim) Hadley, Cherish (Jay) Hadley-Njewel, Jason Peterson, Melissa (Lance Borton) Peterson. Twelve great-grandchildren, sister, Betty Anderson (Ed) of Clear Lake, four brothers, Larry Schisel (Linda) of Garner, Elling Schisel of Troy Mills, Bob Schisel of Britt, Gary Schisel (Jean) of Garner, and numerous other nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, John, great-grandchild, Maelani Hadley, and a brother, Jack. Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane South, Belmond, Iowa
