Kanawha, Iowa, Sept. 21: This community was saddened when it was learned that Mrs. L. P. Peterson, lovingly known as Grandma Peterson, had passed away at her home in the east part of town Wednesday about noon. Mrs. Peterson had been up and about seemingly as well as usual until about two weeks before her death. A siege of intestinal flu proved too severe owing to her advanced age.
Martha Johnson Peterson was born in Kvindherred, Norway, June 12, 1859. She died at her home Wednesday, Sept. 17, 1936, at the age of 77 years, 3 months, 5 days. She was baptised and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, to which she has remained loyal all her life. She was converted at the age of seventeen years. In 1884 she came to America and on Oct. 19, 1887, she was married to Lars P. Peterson at Paxton, Ill. In 1915 they moved to a farm near Corwith and later came to Kanawha to make their home.
Five children were born to this union, one daughter, Nettie, Mrs. Ole Anderson, preceded her mother in death in 1921. Surviving children are Carl J. Peterson of Britt; Anna, Mrs. Ed. Mehl of Britt; Lily at home, and Hattie, Mrs. Dewey Weltzheimer also of Kanawha, besides twelve grandchildren. Besides their own children Mr. and Mrs. Peterson provided a loving Christian home for their four grandchildren, Orvin, Mildred, Gladys and Thelma Anderson.
Funeral services were held at the home at 1:30 P.M. Friday and at the Kanawha Lutheran church at 2:00 P.M. Rev. Morris Peterson had charge of the services. Burial was in Kanawha cemetery.
Weep not that her toils are over, Weep not that her race is run, God grant we may rest as calmly, When our work, like her's is done. 'Til then we yield with gladness, Our mother to Him to keep. And rejoice in sweet assurance "He giveth His loved one sleep."
