Lillie Marie Peterson, 89, passed away Sunday, February 17, 1985 at Holy Family Hospital, Des Plaines, Iowa. Lillie was born December 11, 1895 at Elliot, Illinois, the daughter of Lars and Martha Peterson. As a young girl she moved with her parents to the Stilson area where the family farmed. Lillie attended the rural schools. As a young woman she moved to Kanawha [Iowa] and worked as a mid-wife and nursing care attendant. While in Kanawha, Lillie's sister Nettie, passed away. On her deathbed she made Lillie promise to take care of her children. Lillie took the four kids and raised them. She sewed, baked and worked in a restaurant to earn money to raise the children. She could have married Sig Hatteburg but he wouldn't take the kids. He loved Lillie but it was not to be. In the early 1940's she moved to Chicago where she continued as a private nursing attendant for many years. She worked as a midwife and would stay with new mothers who just had their babies, sometimes up to ten days. Later she stayed and took care of Mr and Mrs. Kendall of Chicago. They were millionaires. After they died their will stipulated that she continue to be paid all the days of her life. In July, 1982, she entered the Holy Family Health Care Center in Des Plaines where she since resided.
Among her survivors are a nephew, Orvin and wife, Betty Anderson of Britt, IA., and three nieces: Mildred and husband Robert Carlson of Chicago, Illinois., Gladys Ehret, Harwood Heights, IL., Thelma Jensen, Elk Grove Village, IL., four foster grandchildren, five foster great-grandchildren and one sister-in-law, Emma Peterson, Britt, Iowa. Lillie was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Carl Peterson, and three sisters; Nettie Anderson, Anna Mehl and Hattie Weltzheimer.
