World War I Veteran Buried Here Sunday

Carl J. Peterson, veteran of World Way I, died at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines Thursday, July 5. He had entered the hospital Sunday afternoon. At death he had reached the age of 61 years, 10 months, and 7 days.

Carl John Peterson was born at Dewey, Ill., August 28, 1889, a son to Lars and Martha Peterson. He grew to manhood at Dewey, was baptized and confirmed at the Ponto Pedien church at Elliott, Ill. In 1915, Mr. Peterson came to Kanawha, Iowa, and in the following year started farming in the Stilson vicinity.

Mr. Peterson entered service July 23, 1918, and began his army training at Camp Pike, Little Rock, Ark. On September 5, 1918, he left Hoboken, N.J., for overseas, arriving at Brest, France, on Sept. 21, and sent with his outfit to the front where he saw active duty. After the close of the war, he began his homeward trip across the Atlantic March 21, 1919, leaving from France, and arriving at Charleston, S. Car., April 5, 1919. On April 13 of the same year he received his discharge from service.

On March 28, 1922, Carl J. Peterson and Miss Emma Ida Anderson, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. August Anderson of Britt, were married at the Lutheran parsonage in Kanawha. In the following year Mr. and Mrs. Peterson went to farming on a farm southeast of Britt, the property of the late John Hammill.

The Petersons lived on the Hammill farm 25 years where their three sons were born. Due to the failing health of Mr. Peterson they retired from the farm to a home in east Britt in 1948.

Mr. Peterson was an active member of both the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge of Britt. Mr. Peterson loved and honored the land for which he fought and one of the first things he did after moving to Britt was to erect a permanent flag pole from which his flag flew on all special occasions. Deceased was also a member of the Britt Sportsman club.

Surviving the passing of Mr. Peterson are his wife, and three sons: Clarence James Peterson, Mason City; John Alexis and Jerry Lee, both of Britt; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Clarence Peterson, and two grandsons, Donald Dean and Roger LeRoy Peterson, all of Mason City; three sisters, Mrs. Ed Mehl, of Britt; Mrs. Dewey Weltzheimer, Des Moines, and Miss Lilly Peterson, Chicago, Ill. The parents and one sister preceded deceased in death.
