MASON CITY - Francis "Frank" H. Sherwood, 82, of Mason City, died Thursday, March 15, 2012, at Heritage Care Center. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 20, at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Sean McRoberts officiating. Inurnment will be in the Klemme Cemetery. A gathering of friends and family will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday, March 19, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Memorials may be directed to the Heritage Care Center, First United Methodist Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Francis "Frank" H. Sherwood was born Sept. 24, 1929, in Mason City, the son of C. Lloyd and Irma (Read) Sherwood. He graduated from Klemme High School in 1947. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1948 and after basic training, took clerical training. He was honorably discharged in 1949. He returned to Mason City in 1949 and began work in the Standard Oil office. Frank was married to Gloria R. Haefner in Klemme in 1951. He moved to Waterloo in 1953 and worked in the Standard Oil Training Station for a year before returning to Mason City, where he owned and operated a Standard Oil Station in Mason City for a year. He worked for Firestone Tire Co. for four years, then worked for Wonder Bread for 28 years, until driving a school bus for Hoffman Transportation until he retired in 1998. Frank enjoyed playing cards with his friends and neighbors and attending concerts and musical events with his wife Gloria. He was an avid Hawkeye fan and enjoyed attending games in Iowa City. He was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church and also a 50 year member of the Harding Lodge No. 649. Despite fighting severe rheumatoid arthritis for over 40 years, he maintained his sense of humor and a smile on his face. He enjoyed the times he spent with his family and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife Gloria of Mason City; children, Debra Frank and husband Jim of El Dorado Hills, Calif., and Jon Sherwood and wife Sandy of Merimac, Mass.; grandchildren, Dr. Amanda Frank and her fiance Dr. Tony Lai, Michelle Bauer and husband Dan, Angela, Abby, Kristen and Katie Sherwood; one great-granddaughter, Mikenzie Bauer; sister, Nellie Ausborn of Belmond; sister-in-law, Margaret Bruner and husband Larry of Iowa City. Frank was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Ervin Ausborn. Arrangements are with Major Erickson Funeral Home and Crematory, Mason City.
