GOODELL, IA - John R. Peterson, 88, of Goodell and Belmond, passed away Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, at the Belmond Medical Center. Funeral services for John Peterson will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Tuesday Nov. 16, at the United Methodist Church, in Goodell. Pastor Paddy Druhl will officiate. Burial will take place in the Amsterdam Cemetery east of Goodell. Graveside military rites will be provided by the Goodell American Legion and the Belmond Honor Guard.
Visitation for John Peterson was held from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday Nov. 15, at the Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane South in Belmond and will continue one hour prior to services at the church today.

John Ronald, the son of Lauretz and Laura Christie Peterson, was born on Sept. 8, 1922, in Goodell. John grew up in the Goodell area where he attended school. John graduated from the Goodell High School in 1940. After high school, John entered the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he served during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946. John was united in marriage to Mavis Schisel on Feb. 22, 1948, in Garner. John farmed his entire life, first east of Goodell, then later in 1953, west of Goodell. In 1977, the Petersons moved to a house south of Goodell on Highway 69. In 1999 the couple moved to a home in Belmond. In 2008 they moved to the assisted living in Clarion, where they spent the past two years before entering the the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond. John is remembered for his love of caring for the grounds surrounding his homes. John had a love for music and was known to burst out in song at any time. John was a member of the E.U.B. Church in Goodell, which later became the United Methodist Church. He served the church in several capacities over the years. John served on the Board of Directors of the Klemme Co-op. He was a member of the Goodell American Legion. John was very proud of the time, work and care he gave as a member of the Amsterdam Township Cemetery Trustees.

John is survived by his wife, Mavis, children, Betty Hadley and husband, Kevin of Rowan: Cindy Fletcher and husband, Jim of Clarion: Ron Peterson of San Angelo, Texas; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; sister, Lula Bell and husband, Fred of Klemme; brother, Christie Peterson of Goodell; in-laws, Edna Peterson of Corwith; Leslie Meres of Ariz.; Betty and Ed Anderson of Clear Lake; Jack and Bessie Schisel of Garner; Larry and Linda Schisel of Garner; Elling Schisel of Bricelyn, Minn.; Bob Schisel of Garner; Gary and Jean Schisel of Garner and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, great granddaughter, Maelani Rose: six sisters: two brothers: three brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law.
