John Maxwell “Max” Sloan was born March 8, 1913, in Corwith, son of John and Dorothy (Hanlon) Sloan. Max grew up and attended school in Corwith. He married Madeline Adeline Schaller on January 2, 1935 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Corwith and then farmed southeast of Corwith until retiring in 1978. Max then wintered in California where he enjoyed helping farmers. He loved farming, fishing, traveling, and spending time with his family at their cabin in northern Minnesota.
John Maxwell Sloan died Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at Westview Care Center, Britt, at the age of 91. He had been a resident there since September, 2001. He is survived by six children, Richard Sloan and his wife Mary Ann, Simi, CA, Dorothy Carlson and her husband Paul, Algona, Robert Sloan and his wife Deanna, Corwith, James Sloan and his wife Margaret, Algona, Deanna Slack and her husband Jamie, Anchorage, AK, and Kimberly Hanna and her husband Tim, Lake Mills; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Maxson, Delano, CA, and Helen Sloan, Corwith; two sisters-in-law, Alice Kelch, Corwith, and Helen DeSart, Lake City; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Madeline on April 20, 1978; a son, John Joseph in infancy; two grandsons; and twin great-grandsons.
