Helen Jane Sloan was born on May 6, 1923, at Corwith, Iowa, to John Maxwell and Dorothy Ruth Hanlon Sloan. She received her education in Corwith, graduating from the Corwith High School in 1941. After her schooling, Helen moved to Algona, Iowa and worked for the telephone office for 4 years. She then moved to Clarinda, Iowa and worked for the Clarinda Farmer Mutual Telephone Co. for 7 years. Helen came back to Corwith in 1953, and took care of her parents. Helen then worked at the grocery store in Corwith for the next 34 years. After her retirement in 1986, Helen worked in Portage, Alaska for two summers.

Helen was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Britt, Iowa, where she was a member of the St. Patrick Guild. She also belonged to the Homemaker’s Club in Corwith. Helen enjoyed cooking and baking but her greatest joy in life was visiting with her many friends and relatives.

Helen died on Wednesday, April 11, 2007, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, Iowa. She was 83. Surviving are her sister, Mary Maxson, Visalia, California and her nieces and nephews, Richard Sloan and wife, Mary Ann, Simi Valley, CA, Dorothy Carlson and husband, Paul, Algona, IA, Robert Sloan and wife, Deanna, Corwith, IA, Margaret Sloan, Algona, IA, Deanna Slack and husband, Jamie, Anchorage, AK, Kim Hanna and husband, Tim, Lake Mills, IA, Mary Barodte and husband, Erich, Granada Hills, CA, William Maxson and wife, Joann, Temecula, CA, and Paul Maxson and wife, Jennifer, Visalia, CA. Also surviving are many great nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Max and her nephew, Jim Sloan.
