April 28, 1928 -- December 15, 2009
Eugene Eldon Waltman was born on April 28, 1928, to Waif and Stella (Van Note) Waltman at their home in Burt, Iowa. He moved to Corwith, Iowa during elementary school years and graduated from Corwith High School in 1946. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and was Honorably Discharged in 1954, as a Staff Sergeant. On December 22, 1957, Eugene married Patricia Nolte in Corning, Iowa. They began their life together farming in Corwith before settling on farms in Rutland and Ottosen, Iowa for a few years, where they forged many life-long friendships and wonderful memories. Upon returning to Corwith, Eugene continued to farm until his retirement in 1997. Even after his retirement, he looked forward to helping others bring in their harvest and to monitoring their progress through his daily drives around Hancock and Kossuth Counties in his red pickup truck.
Eugene, also known to friends as “Hummer”, was an active member of the Elmer Wilson American Legion Post (and social club) #229 in Corwith, where he cultivated numerous friendships. He was also valued as a caring neighbor who would lend a helping hand. He enjoyed fishing---watching it on TV, reading about it in magazines, and, most of all, trekking with family and friends to Canada for walleye and northern. He was also an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and enjoyed rivalries with friends, who were Cubs fans. Above all, Eugene loved to be with his kids and grandkids, and the affection was mutual; he could always be counted on to bring much joy and humor to family gatherings.
Eugene died at his home in Corwith on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at the age of 81. Eugene is survived by three daughters, Rebecca Waltman-Kerwin and husband, Kevin of St. Louis, Missouri; Debra Warner of Algona, Iowa; Kristie Frisbie and husband, Dave of Solon, Iowa; and one son, Douglas Waltman and wife, Christine of Springfield, Missouri. Also surviving are a sister, Sharon Van Tuyl and husband, John of Ankeny, Iowa, ten grandchildren and six great–grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and parents. Gifts and memorials may be made to Hospice of North Iowa, St. Jude’s or a charity of the donor’s choice.
