BRITT, IA -- Opal Olson, 84, died Saturday (Nov. 23, 1996) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Cataldo Funeral Home with the Rev. David A. Lee as officiant. Burial will be in Amsterdam Township Cemetery, Kanawha. Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 178 First Ave. S.W.

Opal Mildred Olson, the daughter of Gerhard and Anna (Fosen) Olson, was born Sept. 21, 1912, on a farm south of Kanawha. She was baptized in the Kanawha Lutheran Church. She attended the rural schools of Hancock County and then graduated from Corwith High School in 1929. Opal worked in a restaurant in Kanawha, at Morell's Packing Plant in Ottumwa, and then for Younkers in Mason City, Austin, Minn., Iowa City and Waterloo. She retired in 1975, and in 1977, moved to Britt to be near family and friends. In 1991, due to ill health, she moved to Agency, later to Bloomfield, and in May of 1996 to the Kanawha Community Nursing Home. She enjoyed her nieces, nephews, Norwegian cooking and playing cards.

She is survived by three sisters-in-law, Anna Marie Olson of Britt, Glenice Olson of Waterloo, and Yvonne Olson of Ottumwa; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Aletha Gault; four brothers, Lynn Olson, Clair Olson, Maurice Olson and Jay Olson; a sister-in-law, Marguerite Olson; and a brother-in-law, Weston Gault.
