Merlin Arlene (Pringnitz) Mau, the daughter of Emil and Anna (Schoenwetter) Pringnitz, was born on July 26, 1919, in rural Hanock County. She attended country school at Twin Lakes #6, rural Kanawha. On April 9, 1943, Merlin was united in marriage to Lowell Mau, at Liberty Methodist Church, west of Klemme. They were married while Lowell was in the service, which resulted in the couple relocating to Ohio, then Texas, and back to Iowa. While in Iowa, the couple lived on a farm in rural Kanawha. Later in life, Merlin became a cook at the Kanawha Care Center. She worked there for 15 to 16 years and eventually became the head cook. Merlin was a member of the United Methodist Women at the Klemme United Methodist Church and was a member of the Martha Circle. She also enjoyed being a 4-H leader and was very active in the American Legion Auxiliary. Merlin loved gardening and being outdoors. She picked raspberries and made wonderful raisin-filled cookies, along with all the other delicious baked goods she made for family and friends. Merlin was a loving Grandma and she made a quilt for each of her grandchildren when they were born.
