BELMOND, IA - Thelma Lucinda Schlichting, 102, of Belmond, formerly of Ventura, passed away Wednesday (Feb. 9, 2000) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond. Funeral services for Thelma Schlichting will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond, with Pastor Paul Hasel of the United Methodist Church in Ventura officiating. Burial will be in the Amsterdam Cemetery at Goodell. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond.

Thelma Lucinda Schlichting, the daughter of Alfred C. and Lydia Smith Carpenter, was born Feb. 10, 1897, on the Carpenter farm near Goodell. Thelma grew up in the Goodell area and graduated from the 10th grade at the Goodell High School. She then went on to Belmond High School and graduated from the 12th grade in 1916. Following graduation from high school, Thelma taught in the Avery and Twin Lake Township country schools. Thelma was united in marriage with Albert Schlichting on Dec. 27, 1922, at the Carpenter farm near Goodell. Following their marriage, the couple farmed near Kanawha. Upon retirement in 1946, the couple moved to their lake home in Ventura, where they continued to live until the time of Albert's death in 1979. Upon the death of her husband, Thelma became a resident at the Belmond Health Care Center. Thelma was a baptized member of the Goodell United Brethren Church. When the couple moved to Ventura, she transferred her membership to the Ventura United Methodist Church. She enjoyed tatting, reading and writing letters until her eyesight failed.

Thelma is survived by one sister, Thora Trees, of Belmond; one brother, Richard Carpenter, of Whitethorn, Calif.; one sister-in-law, Jane Carpenter, of San Diego, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Albert, in 1979; and three brothers, Lloyd, Harry and Alfred. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given in Thelma's name.
