KANAWHA, IA - John Omvig, 81, of Kanawha, passed away Wednesday (Dec. 11, 2002) at Wright Medical Center in Clarion. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Kanawha Lutheran Church in Kanawha with Dr. John Meyer officiating. Burial will be in Amsterdam Township Cemetery near Kanawha. Full military services will be conducted by the Kanawha American Legion Severson Post 77. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home in Kanawha andwill continue one hour prior to the services Saturday at the church.
John, the son of Abel and Mary Fosen Omvig, was born May 22, 1921, on a farm near Denhart. John was inducted into the United States Army on Aug. 17, 1942, during World War II and was discharged on Jan. 16, 1946. On April 21,1945, John received a shrapnel wound in the shoulder while riding in a tank. He was later awarded a Purple Heart for the injuries he received in Germany. Following his discharge, John returned to the Kanawha area. John was united in marriage with Phyllis Norby on March 8, 1947, at Minneapolis, Minn. The couple made their home and farmed near Kanawha until 1983, when they moved to Kanawha. John was a member of Kanawha Lutheran Church in Kanawha.
John is survived by three daughters, Mary Jo Bell and her husband, Larry, of Marion, Ohio, Marlys Johnson and her husband, Marvin, of Kanawha, and Sharon Grimm and her husband, Robert, of Kanawha; two sons, Roger Omvig and his wife, Diane, of Kanawha, and Dean Omvig and his wife, Mary Ann, of Valencia, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Daphne Pogge, Mike Omvig, Justin, Benjamin and Jennifer Bell, Dallas and Brittney Johnson, and Tyler and Trevor Grimm; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Oviedia Michelson and her husband, Ernest, of Kanawha, Celia Roskamp of Kanawha, and Mable Peterson of Britt; one brother, Art Omvig and his wife, Marjorie, of Kanawha, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Phyllis, in 1994; great-grandson, Nicholas Pogge; two sisters, Alice Asche and Synneva Abbas; and two brothers, Joe and Oren Omvig.
