On Oct. 7, 1934, he married Lila Hanson at the United Brethren Church in Goodell, Iowa. The couple had five sons, Donald, Jerry, Stanley, Phillip and Lavern. They were members of the Wesley United Methodist Church, Mason City. Sherril performed different jobs, foreman at Chevrolet factory in Flint, Mich., worked at a gas station, as a farmer, welder at Thomas Machine Co., and maintenance man for a 400 unit apartment complex in Dallas, Texas. He retired in 1969, after which the coupled lived in Clear Lake. He loved golfing and bowling. He took up golfing at age 68. He started bowling in 1927 and was on many bowling leagues over the years before giving up the sport in 1992 because of his health. He enjoyed his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Lila Benner, Mason City; a daughter, Beverley Kephart and her husband, Raymond, Brighton, Iowa; five sons, Donald Benner and his wife, Mary Jo, Phoenix, Ariz., Jerry Benner and his wife, Arlene, Grand Prairie, Texas, Stanley Benner and his wife, Betsy, St. Peter, Minn., Phillip Benner and his wife, Maryann, Shreveport, La., and Lavern Benner and his wife, Tess, Humbolt, Ariz.; two sisters, Bonnie Beers and her husband, Burdette, Clear Lake, and Nadine McCormick, Spencer, Iowa; 22 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Opal; a daughter, Shirley Jean; a sister, Hazel Govig; a brother, Kenneth Benner; and a grandson, Thomas Anthony Benner.

Organist Arlis Meeker accompanied soloist Romeyn Sloan. Honorary pallbearers were Janet Kephart, Lynn Kephart, Mare Benner, David Benner, Dawn Benner, Carrie Martin, Brian Benner, Lee Kephart, Joel Kephart, John Benner, Julie Hanley, Jerry Dean Benner, Karen Graves, Barry Benner. Pallbearers were Michael Benner, Kevin Benner, Tim Benner, Jay Kephart, Jim Benner, Olen Wynn.
