KANAWHA, IA - Luella J. Hughes, 93, of Kanawha, passed away Tuesday (Sept. 9, 2003) at the Kanawha Community Home in Kanawha. Funeral services for Luella Hughes will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Kanawha Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. John Meyer and Janelle Siffring, AiM officiating. Burial will be in Amsterdam Township Cemetery near Kanawha. Friends may greet the family from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home, 118 East Second St. in Kanawha, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Luella Julia (Minor) Hughes was born on Aug. 26, 1910, the daughter of Ormal and Julia (Shurson) Minor, at her family's home southwest of Kanawha. She attended country school in rural Kanawha. On Aug. 3, 1940, in Des Moines, Iowa, Luella was unit-ed in marriage with Glenn Hughes, whom she was introduced to on a blind date. The couple enjoyed going dancing and to the movies with each other. They made their home on a farm in rural Kanawha where they worked hard and raised their family. Luella was a very dedicated farm wife who spent time tending to her strawberry patch and was known for the wonderful kringla she made. She also loved to quilt with her friends at the Kanawha Lutheran Church where she was a faithful member. Luella entered the Kanawha Community Home in November of 2000, where she remained active visiting with the residents, staff, and watching the animals in the yard outside her window.

Survivors include her children, Judy Casper and her husband, George, of Cabool, Mo., Ron Hughes and his wife, Meg, of Kanawha, and Glenda Hughes of Forest City; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three sisters, Gladys Spoon and her husband, Carrole, of Liberty Center, Myrtle Thielen and her husband, Joe, of Eagle Grove, and Ramona Brooks, of Des Moines; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glenn; a great-grandson, David Casper Jr.; two sisters, Sadie Glades Minor and Dena Johnson; and three brothers, Joe, Gayhard, and Orville Minor.
