KANAWHA, IA--Mrs. Rose LaVonne Morris Maland, 79, of 233 University Ave., Des Moines, formerly of Kanawha, died Wednesday (July 16, 1997) at Mercy Hospital Medical Center, Des Moines, of coronary arrest. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Kanawha United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Susan Detwiler officiating. Burial will be in the Amsterdam Township Cemetery, near Kanawha. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until time of services on Monday at the Kanawha United Methodist Church. Westover Funeral Home, 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines, is handling the arrangements.

Rose LaVonne was born on Dec. 16, 1917, in Corwith, to Elmer and Lucille (Harron) Morris. Her given name was Rose LaVonne, but she always went by LaVonne. LaVonne was united in marriage to Omar Maland on Feb. 8, 1948, and they farmed near Kanawha until 1962, when they retired. They moved into Kanawha after retirement. Omar and LaVonne spent their winters, for many years, in Mesa, Ariz. She lived in Kanawha for most of her life, before moving to Des Moines. LaVonne suffered many years with arthritis, spending the last seven years in a nursing home in Des Moines. LaVonne participated in many community activities. She was a member of the Kanawha United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Eastern Star and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed crafts, playing cards, bowling and watching the Minnesota Twins and Phoenix Suns games.

She is survived by one daughter, Sharon Wigton and her husband, Roger, of Des Moines; two grandchildren, Paul Eliason of Clear Lake, and Dorcey Mosher and her husband, Monte, of Des Moines; three stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; one brother, Hersal Morris of Kanawha; and one sister, Bernice Conklin, of La Mesa, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and one sister, Audrey Riesetter.
