Pearl Irene (Hollatz) DeGroote was born on April 6th, 1921 in Garner, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Bertha (Bohn) Hollatz. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended St. John Parochial School through the 8th grade and graduated from Ventura High School in 1939. Following high school, Pearl worked at a defense plant in Council Bluffs, Iowa for 2 ½ years during WWII. She was married to Darrel DeGroote on April 6th, 1947 in Mason City, Iowa. Darrel and Pearl farmed for 37 years in the Corwith, Iowa area. Pearl enjoyed her flowers, gardening and crocheting. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren participating in all of their sports and other activities throughout the years. She also enjoyed listening to the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Minnesota Twins on the radio. Darrel and Pearl enjoyed spending their winters in Mesa, Arizona.

Pearl’s husband, Darrel preceded her in death on February 6, 2005. Pearl became a resident of the Kanawha Nursing Home in Kanawha, Iowa in April of 2004. She died at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, Iowa on Tuesday, March 28, 2006 at the age of 84. She will be sadly missed by her sons: Douglas and wife, Carol and Gary and wife, Elizabeth, all of Corwith. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Brent and wife, Beth, Bethany, Ben, Holly, Heather and husband, William and Wayne; and two great grandsons, Gabriel Rameriz and Ethan DeGroote. She is also survived by her sisters; Edna Albers, Clear Lake, Iowa, Ethel Schoenwetter, Klemme, Iowa, Helen and her husband, Ray Harms, of Clear Lake, Iowa, Stella and her husband, Brynes Lemke of Mason City, Iowa and Ardith and her husband, Wayne Toppin of Ventura, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Darrel DeGroote, her son, Mark Everett DeGroote, her parents, Henry and Bertha Hollatz, her brothers, Ellsworth, Wilbur and Melvin Hollatz and her sisters, Edith Poohl and Alma Reed. Memorials may be given to the St. John Lutheran Church in Corwith.
