Gerrit De Waard was born on March 29, 1918, in Phillips County, Kansas to John and Lyda Vreeman De Waard. He was baptized at Luctor, Kansas. At age 3, Gerrit came with his family to Iowa and settled in the Kanawha area. He received his education in the rural school system near Kanawha and Wesley. After his schooling, Gerrit helped on the family farm. Gerrit served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corps. After the service he worked for the Helm Hardware in Woden, Iowa as a plumber and electrician. In 1948, Gerrit started farming the home place near Woden. He was married to Grace Looft on February 6, 1951, at Algona, Iowa. The couple continued farming between Woden and Titonka. Gerrit retired in 1983 and the couple moved into Titonka. Gerrit’s wife, Grace preceded him in death on September 3, 1992. On October 16, 1993, Gerrit was married to Wilma Van Hove Wubben at Independence, Iowa. The couple continued living in Titonka. Gerrit was a lifelong member of the Woden Christian Reformed Church, where he professed his faith. He greatly loved his Lord, church and family. He served on the church board, serving as Elder and Deacon. He was on the elevator board, the Titonka Care Center board for many years and telephone board, where he was recently awarded a plaque for 30 years of service, most of that time serving as president of the board. Gerrit loved to travel and almost made it around the world. He was a very special uncle to his many nieces and nephews. Gerrit died on Monday, May 31, 2004, at the Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa. He was 86.

Gerrit is survived by his wife, Wilma of Titonka, Iowa and his step-son, Douglas Wubben and wife, Christa, Independence, Iowa. Also surviving are 4 step grandchildren, Tanya Greiner and husband, John, Samantha, Jared and Erica Wubben, 2 brothers, Jacob De Waard and wife, Lorraine, Titonka, Iowa, Henry J. De Waard and wife, Josephine, Kanawha, Iowa, 2 sisters, Elsie Miller, Britt, Iowa, Sereina Holleman, Hancock, Missouri. 2 sisters-in-law, Ruth De Waard, Woden, Iowa and Johnette Kahl, Oregon City, Oregon, 1 brother-in-law, John Kahl, Oregon City, Oregon and many nieces and nephews. Gerrit was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, Adrian, Manus and Henry, his first wife, Grace, his step-son Russell Wubben, several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
