Imogene “Gene” L. Elbert was born June 11, 1917, in Kanawha, Iowa, the daughter of Lester and Vera Davison Roderick. She attended school and later graduated from Lone Rock High School in Lone Rock, Iowa. On October 26, 1936, Imogene was united in marriage to Michael Elbert in Algona, Iowa. After their marriage the couple farmed west of Algona, and in the early 1940’s, moved east of Algona and farmed until 1961, before moving north of Algona where they farmed and enjoyed remodeling and redecorating their home. In the past Gene had worked at Carson’s and also sold Avon. The couple moved to Van Buren Terrace in Algona in September of 2000. On November 8, 2001, they moved into Algona Manor. The couple enjoyed 66 years of marriage before Mike died on December 14, 2002. Gene enjoyed cooking, baking, knitting hats for her grandchildren and also donated many hats she made to the needy, making rosaries and collecting brass. She was a member of St. Cecelia Catholic Church.

Gene died on Saturday, January 8, 2005, at the Algona Manor Care Center, at the age of 87. She is survived by her children: Sondra and Joe Rahm of St. Benedict, Iowa; Roderick and Kathy Elbert of North Mankato, Minnesota; Edward and Connie Elbert of Algona, Iowa; Michaela and Michael Brass of Rudd, Iowa; Jan and Gary Brown of Swaledale, Iowa; 24 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sisters, Berneyce Geilenfeld and Margaret Jensen; grandson, Joseph Rahm; granddaughter, Kathy Jo Rahm and a great-grandson, Kellen Rahm.
