Mason City Globe Gazette, IowaBRITT - George P. Smidt, 88, of Woden passed away on Saturday (May 19, 2007) at Westview Care Center in Britt. Funeral services for George P. Smidt will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2007, at the Woden Christian Reformed Church rural Woden, with Pastor Joel DeBoer and Judy Junkermeir officiating. Burial will be at the Woden Christian Reformed Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. today, May 22, 2007, at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel in Britt and continue one hour prior to services at the church.
Gerhardt (George P.) Smidt was born on Aug. 18, 1918, in rural Kanawha, to Peter and Grace Luppen Smidt. George attended rural schools near Wesley. George married Bertha Huisinga on Aug. 22, 1940, at the home of Bertha's parents near Woden. George and Bertha farmed until 1983, south of Woden. After retirement to Woden, George worked for the town of Woden as street commissioner for several years. George was a member of the Woden Christian Reformed Church. George and Bertha served for many years as 4-H leaders and as custodians of the Woden Christian Reformed Church. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, roller-skating, gardening and, in particular, spending time with his family.
George is survived by his wife of 66 years, Bertha; son, Robert and wife, Phyllis, of Burnsville, Minn.; and daughter, Gloria and husband, Mark, of Pekin, Ill. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Also surviving are sisters, Della Pommer and Grace Kruger, and her husband Albertus, all of Britt. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Peter.
