Services At St. Olaf For Doris Mewes, 83

Funeral services for Doris A. Mewes, 83, were held at the Saint Olaf Lutheran Church between Kanawha and Belmond. Pastor Lowell H. Halvorson officiated. Special music was provided by Carol Severson, organist, and Susan Toftey, soloist, who sang “Borning Cry.” The congregation hymns were Blessed Assurance and How Great Thou Art. The casket bearers were Jim Mewes, Rod Toftey, Donovan Baker, Justin Pralle, Jim Morris and Al Lang. The honorary casket bearers were Jack Mewes, Tristan Mewes, Don Mewes and Cliff Olson. Interment was at the Amsterdam Township Cemetery. The services were under the direction of the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home of Belmond.

Doris Arlene, the daughter of William and Jennie (Albers) Reuben, was born March 28, 1924 in Kanawha. She was baptized and confirmed at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme. Doris attended school in Kanawha and graduated from Kanawha High School in 1941. Doris married Bill Mewes. The couple made their home near Kanawha, where Doris worked at the Kanawha Community Home. She and Bill very much enjoyed the winters they spent in Arizona. Doris is remembered as a very hard worker, helping Bill care for the livestock. She was a very good cook. Doris enjoyed doing embroidery and puzzles. She was very fond of the time she spent with her sister, Della Toftey. Doris was a member of the St. Olaf Lutheran Church, where she was involved in the Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the Home Study Club.

Doris is survived by her son, Gary and Robin of Lake Andes, South Dakota. She is survived by a granddaughter, Shawna Pralle and husband Justin of Belmond and a grandson, Jim and wife Jennifer of Clarion. She leaves four great grandchildren – Tristan, Ellie, Brianne and Brook. She is survived by her sister – Della Toftey of Kanawha, and a nephew – Rod Toftey and wife Susan of Kanawha. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Bill.
