ALEXANDER -- Deloris Elaine Nelson McVey, 59, passed away Tuesday (Oct. 31, 1995) at University Hospitals, Iowa City. Memorial services will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Reformed Church, Alexander, with the Rev. Jerry Norman officiating. The family requests casual attire be worn for the memorial service. Interment will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Amsterdam Township Cemetery, Kanawha. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond.

Dee was born on Nov. 13, 1935, in Hayfield, the daughter of Marson K. Nelson and Verla M. (nee) Berhow Nelson. She grew up in Belmond and attended Belmond schools, graduating in 1953. She spent a couple of years in California and then returned to Belmond in 1957 where she worked at various jobs. Dee owned and operated the Sundowner Steakhouse Restaurant in Clarion and later Sundowner II in Thornton. On Dec. 14, 1987, she was united in marriage to Jim McVey. The couple made their home in Alexander. For the last five years, she worked at Dudley's near Hampton. Dee loved to spend her time reading and crocheting. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and gardening. She liked to cook. Her kitchen was a restaurant to her grandkids; whatever they wanted she would fix. Family traditions were important to her. She is remembered as a caring daughter, taking care of her father after her mother's death. Dee was a "Grandma" to more than her own grandchildren and she was also a good neighbor, active in supporting her neighbors and community. Dee belonged to the First Reformed Church in Alexander where she participated in the Women's Guild.

Dee is survived by her husband, Jim; two daughters, Susan Weide of Iowa Falls, and Pamela Wiemann and her husband, Dennis, of Norwalk; one brother, Duane "Swede" and his wife, Gerri, of Encinitas, Calif.; four grandchildren, Denise and her husband, Tony; David, Jonathan and Sarah; one great-granddaughter, Macy; five stepchildren; and four stepgrandchildren; and many relatives and friends.
