Mason City (Iowa) Globe GazetteAlice Irene Sloan, 89, of Corwith, died on Monday (April 7, 2003) at the Hancock County Hospital in Britt. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Corwith, with the Rev. Dan Fernandez officiating. Interment will be in the Corwith Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Corwith.
Alice Irene Sloan was born to Frank and Mary (McCutcheon) Bjornson on June 10, 1913 at the farm home in Goldfield. Having received and professed Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior she continues to be in relationship with the Lord in her new home. She served the Lord on Earth using her God-given spiritual gifts of mercy and hospitality. In 1932, Alice graduated from Goldfield High School. She taught country school for two years in Goldfield, then received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She continued teaching elementary school at Swea City, Sac City and Ames. On April 6, 1947, Alice married Marvin John George Sloan of Corwith at her parent's farm home. As a faith follower of Christ, Alice was a longtime member of the Corwith United Methodist Church. She served multiple terms as the Church membership chairperson and was active in United Methodist Women's work. In the community Alice enjoyed Delta Club and Homemakers Club. Service to others, gardening, baking, crafts and being a friend filled her life.
Alice is survived by two sons, Kenneth and his wife, Mary, of Milford, and Steve of Corwith; grandchildren, Aaron Sloan of Milford, David Sloan and his wife, Cathy, and great-granddaughter, Tori, of Ames, and Mark Sloan of Ames. Also surviving is her sister, Martha Krauss, and her husband, Elmer; sister-in-law, Miriam Bjornson, and her husband, Charles Walker, of Palo Alto, Calif.; sister-in-law, Margaret Glawe, of Kanawha; brother-in-law, Glen Sloan and his wife, Phyllis, of Corwith; along with several nephews and nieces. Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin; her parents; brother, the Rev. Harold Bjornson of Palo Alto, Calif.; and sister, Luva Hughett, of Des Moines.
