Stella Hill, 89, of Mason City, formerly of Garner, died Wednesday (May 8, 1996) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garner, with the Rev. Clyde Kieschnick officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial
Unit. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Garner.

Stella Irene Hill, a daughter of Rasme and Carrie Helena (Bang) Matson was born July 26, 1906, at Ellsworth. After graduating from Eagle Grove High School in 1926, she worked in Chicago from 1930-?. She was married to Charles H. Hill in Chicago, Ill. on June 15, 1935. She served her country in the U.S. Army, with the rank of sergeant in the W.A.C. Stella was stationed in Colorado Springs, Colo.,and Paris, France. After the war, she resumed working in Chicago until 1953 when she began working in San Diego, Calif. After her retirement in 1970, she lived in San Diego and from ?, at Prairie View Apartments in Garner. In 1993, she moved to Shalom Tower in Mason City and later lived with her niece and husband, Carren and John Schaer of Mason City. She enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, Scandinavia and other European countries. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner and the W.A.C. Veteran's, Chapter #50, in San Diego. Survivors include two nieces, Carren Schaer of Mason City and Janet Swanson of Federal Way, Wash.; a nephew, Bill Matson, of Sparks, Nev.; and a sisterinlaw, Enola Matson, of Matteson, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Ruth Smed and Marie Gotfried; and three brothers, Ralph Matson, Howard Matson and an infant brother.
