James E. Middleton, 85, a longtime resident of Webster City, died Monday evening at the Hamilton County hospital following a two-week illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Foster Funeral home with the Rev. S.W. Cunningham officiating and with burial in Graceland cemetery.

James Ely Middleton, son of William and Catherine Mintun Middleton, was born August 8, 1883 on a farm near Modale, Iowa, and was reared and educated in that community.

He was united in marriage Feb. 19, 1910 to Emma Hansen, and the couple engaged in farming in the Modale community, moving in 1928 to Woolstock where Mr. Middleton was manager of the Woolstock elevator for several years. In 1943, the family moved to Webster City where he was employed by the city of Webster City in the light and power department and also at the city scales. He retired in 1956. For the past several years he had been assistant custodian at Twin Parks in this city.

He is survived by his wife, two sons and four daughters: Harold Middleton, Fort Dodge, Albert Middleton, Mrs. Harold (Wilma) Caquelin and Mrs. Elena Jensen, all of Webster City; Mrs. Melvin (Helen) Tubbs, Buena Park, Calif., and Mrs. Robert (Shirley) Mitchell of Webster City; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons; one daughter; his parents; two sisters; four brothers; two half-sisters and two half-brothers.

Mr. Middleton was baptized in the Methodist faith.
