Roger Haner Williams
August 10, 1933 --- August 19, 1993

Roger H. Williams was born to Genevra and Lewis Williams on August 10, 1933 in Waverly. After graduation from Waverly High School, he went on to attend Cornell College in Mount Vernon where he graduated in 1955. He then went on to teach in Lost Nation where he met his wife, Shirley Holtz. They moved to Eagle Grove where they both accepted teaching positions.

The couple was married April 14, 1957 in Oxford Junction. He received his M. A. from Drake University. He spent 37 years teaching, leading and helping students in the Eagle Grove Community school system in positions of English teacher and guidance counselor.

He served as past president of the Eagle Grove Lions, president of EGEA, an was a member of
the Eagle Grove United Methodist Church. He initiated both the Senior Recognition Night and the Dollars for Scholars Fund for graduates of Eagle Grove High School. He also served as sponsor of the National Honor Society and implemented the annual exchange trips with other high schools across the United States. He had participated in the first RAGBRAI and many subsequent rides.

Roger H. Williams, 60, died Thursday evening, August 19, 1993, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn., after complications following a lung transplant. He is survived by his wife; son, Kent and his wife, Nancy of Leonard, Texas; daughter, Kendra and her husband, Hector of Waterloo; granddaughters, Diana and Madeline; and grandson, Colson Roger; two brothers, Edward of Wilton and Anson of Minneapolis, Minn.

Services were held Tuesday, August 24, at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove with the Rev. Donald Callen and Omar Pettersen officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Roger Williams Scholarship for Higher Education Fund.
