James Edwin Whalen
November 8, 1886 --- March 23, 1949

James Whalen died at his home yesterday morning at 5 a.m.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 9 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Church, Father Robert McDonald from Hopkinton will officiate at the service. The Rev. J. E. Slowey will give the sermon. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery following the service.

Born in Darlington, Wis., in 1887 [1886], Whalen moved to Eagle Grove 36 Years Ago.

Whalen is survived by his wife, Mrs. Charlotte Whalen, acting postmaster; two children, Mrs. James L. Green, Cedar Rapids; James Whalen Jr., La Crosse, Wis.; five brothers and sisters, Mrs. L. R. Beatty, Omaha, Neb.; Mrs. Florence Benolken, Omaha, Neb.; Mrs. C. M. Myers, Sioux City; Art Whalen, Omaha, Neb.; and Louis Whalen, San Francisco, Calif.; and one granddaughter, Barbara Green, Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services for James E. Whalen were held Friday morning at Sacred Heart Catholic church. Mr. Whalen died March 23rd following a long illness.

Rev. Robert McDonald of Hopkinton, formerly of Eagle Grove, and a cousin of Mrs. Whalen's sang the requiem mass, and Rev. James Slowey gave the funeral sermon. Music was furnished by Mrs. A. E. Keller, Miss Pauline Kubitschek, Miss Alice O'Toole and Miss Harriet Amundsen, and pall bearers were Wm. Midland, Harley Notestine, Harry Cline, Harry Weidenman, T. L. Rogerson and John Henneberry. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

James Whalen was born November 8, 1886 in Darlington, Wisconsin and his parents were Mr. and Mrs. James Whalen. The family moved to Cherokee, Iowa where J. E. attended high school, later going to Buena Vista college in Storm Lake. He came to Eagle Grove in 1913 when a salesman for the Cudahy Packing Co. He was married in June 1916, to Charlotte Ford of Clare, who survives, and to this union were born two children, Jean, Mrs. James Green of Cedar Rapids, and James Jr. of La Cross, Wisconsin.

In 1925 Mr. Whalen became associated with the Mutual Life Insurance of New York and was employed by his company until he retired five years ago.

In addition to his immediate family, Mr. Whalen is survived by three sisters, Mrs. L. R. Beatty, Mrs. Florence Benolken of Omaha, Neb. and Mrs. C. M. Meyers of Sioux City, and two brothers, Art Whalen of Omaha, Neb. and Louis Whalen of San Francisco, California, also one granddaughter, Barbara Green.

Out-of-town people here for the funeral were Dr. and Mrs. L. M. Henry and son of Kansas City, Missouri; Clem Ford of Sioux City, Mrs. M. J. Ford, Mrs. Katherine Forney, Mrs. Julia Condon and son Dick, Mr. and Mrs. Jim O'Hearn, Mr. and Mrs. George Cole, Frank Lundblad, Fort Dodge; Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Ford, Gilmore City, Mrs. J. E. McDonald, Hopkinton, Mr. and Mrs. Vincent McMahon, Mrs. Bob Yetmer, Clare; Mr. and Mrs. Leo Porter, Clarion; Mr. and Mrs. James L. Green, Cedar Rapids, James Whalen, La Cross, Wisconsin, Mrs. L. R. Beatty, Mrs. Florence Benolken, son Dick, Art Whalen of Omaha, Nebraska, C. M. Myers, Sioux City.
