Sam Werstein was born November 13, 1913 at Portland, Ore., to Sam and Theresa Schmitt Werstein. He received his education in Britt.
In 1932, Sam was married to Mildred Throstheim. She died in 1972.
Sam Werstein was a truck driver for many years, working out of Eagle Grove. In June of 1963, he was united in marriage to Olive Fisher at Renwick. They lived in Renwick from 1963 until Olive died in 1980. Sam then moved to Princeton, Ky. He attended the Lebanon Baptist Church in Caldwell County, Ky.
Sam Werstein died at his home near Princeton on Sunday, August 28, 1988. He was 74.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one grandson; one great-grandson; four brothers; two sisters; and one step-grandchild. He is survived by his children, Donna Mullen, Newport News, Va.; Mrs. Newton (Darlene) Bryant, Mason City; Roger Werstein and wife, Kathy, Richmond, Va.; Ronald Werstein and wife, Faye, Caldwell County, Ky.; Mrs. Roger (Theresa) Gabel, Mason City; and Richard Werstein and wife, Patti, Newport News, Va. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Rose Lang, Omaha, Neb.; Mrs. Dale (Eva) Sutton, Mason City; ten grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Sam is also survived by his step-children, Eugene Haugland and wife, Delia, Mesa, Ariz.; Melvin Haugland and wife, Janis, Eagle Grove; Myron Haugland, Boone; Mrs. Eugene (Shirley) Fisher, Prophetstown, Ill.; 13 step-grandchildren; and 12 step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, September 1, at 2 p.m. in the United Methodist Church in Renwick. The Rev. Henry Huddleston officiated. Interment was in the Glenwood Cemetery at Goldfield. The Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home of Renwick.
