Former Resident Dies at Toledo

The following obituary was received here of John Knowlen, 81, who died at Toledo Friday. Mr. Knowlen will be remembered here by many of the older residents of the community as the Knowlen family lived here for many years:

"John Edwin Knowlen of Toledo died Friday morning at 8 o'clock in the hospital near Toledo. He had been in poor health for several years. He died a few days before his 82nd birthday.

"John Edwin Knowlen, the son of Peter Knowlen and Rhoda Tryon Knowlen, was born March 9, 1857 in Canada, and died March 3, 1939, while a resident of Tama county, Iowa, at the age of 81 years, 11 months, 6 days.

"When he was 14 years old he came with his parents to Tama county, the family settling two miles west of Elberon in what was then known as the community of Waltham. He farmed with his father for a time. Mr. Knowlen later entered the employ of the C. & N. W. Ry. and worked on the railway for many years. He engaged in business at Algona for several years and then came to this vicinity about 15 years ago.

"Mr. Knowlen, a widower, is survived by a daughter, Martha. He also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Winters of Tama; Mrs. Elizabeth McMilliam of Independence, Mo., and Mrs. Grace McLaurie of Black Duck, Minn., and two brothers, Peter Knowlen, a resident of Burton, S. D., and James Knowlen of Minot, N. D. Three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

"Mr. Knowlen belonged to the United Brethren church, and was a great reader of the Bible. He had been a member of the Modern Woodmen of the World.

"The funeral service was held Monday morning at 10 o'clock from Harrisons Funeral Home in Tama, with Rev Louis Skow, Tama minister, officiating. Relatives and friends were pallbearers. Burial was in the Waltham cemetery. Mrs. McMilliam came to attend the funeral.
