Mrs. Jennie Kelling, who recently celebrated her 90th birthday here, died in her home early last Saturday morning, apparently of a heart attack.

She had celebrated her Nov. 2 birthday with an open house in the Methodist church and several parties were given by friends and relatives. Her brother and five sisters were here for the occasion.

Mrs. Kelling was the oldest resident of Goldfield and had lived in this locality all her life.

Funeral services were held Tuesday in the Goldfield Methodist church with Rev. B. R. Price in charge. Interment was in Glenwood Cemetery Goldfield.

Obituary

Jennie Hinton Kelling, daughter of Betsy and Edwin Hinton, was born Nov. 2, 1872 on a farm just east of Goldfield.

She died at her home on Saturday, Nov. 17 at the age of 90 years and 15 days. She was united in marriage to Arthur Kelling in 1915. He preceded her in death in 1942. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Emily Mantle in 1953.

She was an active member of the Goldfield Methodist church, having been baptized there and joined the church on Feb. 6, 1898. She was a member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service (WSCS) and was supply secretary of that organization for the Goodwill Industries of Sioux City.

She attended a country school, Goldfield high school and Teachers College at Cedar Falls where she was awarded a teacher’s certificate. She taught school for 15 years in Boone and Liberty townships.

She had many rich memories of the days when Indians camped north of Goldfield and covered wagons passed on their way west.

As the town’s oldest resident, Jennie had celebrated her 90th birthday on Oct. 28, 1962 with an open house at the Methodist Church. This was attended by a host of her many friends and relatives.

Jennie was very active in both her own home and in community and civic affairs. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge for 67 years and was treasurer of the organization at the time of her death. She was an officer in the American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by 5 sisters and 1 brother, Mrs. Mary Greenwalt of Toledo, Ohio, Mrs. Myrtle Wood of Pewamo, Mich., Mrs. Clara Pollack of Clarion, Mrs. R. W. Skinner (Nelle) and Mrs. Alice Agard of Goldfield, and Edwin Hinton of St. Charles, Ill. Also many nieces, nephews and friends.

A service by the Rebekah Lodge was held on the morning of November 20. Funeral services were held in the Goldfield Methodist church on Tuesday, Nov. 20, with Rev. B. R. Price officiating. Interment was in the Glenwood Cemetery. –Goldfield Chronicle
