Melvin Jerde
14 April 1900 --- 5 May 1975

Funeral services were held for Melvin Jerde, 75, who died Monday following a sudden illness at his home in Clarion. Services were held at the First Lutheran Church in Clarion at 2:00 p. m. Wednesday, May 7, 1975. Rev. Oliver Johnson officiated. The Eyler Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Wayne Ebert was the organist and Richard Urness was the soloist. Casketbearers were Virgil Brady, Jerry Carroll, Dale Dougherty, Pat Porter, Ray Sebby and Howard Whitman. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery at Clarion.

Mr. Jerde was born in Winnebago County, graduated from Forest City High School and attended Waldorf College, Forest City. After his education, he operated a general store at Neils, Iowa, with his father. He married Mabel Langerud in 1928 at Forest City; they moved to Clarion in 1930, where he operated the New Home Cafe with his brother, Joe. They sold the cafe business in 1944 and the Jerdes continued living in Clarion. In 1961 Mr. Jerde reopened the New Home Cafe with his son, Jim. Melvin Jerde semi-retired from the cafe business in 1965. Mrs. Jerde died in 1971.

He was a former member of the Iowa Restaurant Association. Mr. Jerde was a charter member of the First Lutheran Church in Clarion.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Monte Potter, Iowa Falls; son. Jim. Clarion; two grandchildren and sister, Miss Myrth Jerde, Clarion.
