Robert James Thorn
30 May 1923 --- 16 December 1970Robert James Thorn, son of Otis and Margaret Fogarty Thorn, was born May 30, 1923, in Eagle Grove. He attended the Sacred Heart School and graduated from Eagle Grove High School with the class of 1942.
On November 18, 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps where he served 37 months, two years being spent in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II.
He was united in marriage to Florine Brauman in Eagle Grove, May 23, 1946, and to this union two daughters were born, Marcia and Nancy.
Robert was a mechanic for Ellsworth Freight Lines many years and for the past several years he had worked in that capacity for Umthun's Trucking Co., where he was employed at the time of his passing.
He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, V.F.W. and the American Legion.
Robert had been a patient in Mercy Hospital, Fort Dodge, the past three weeks and passed away there Wednesday afternoon, December 16. He was 47 years, 6 months, and 16 days of age at the time of his death.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Donald, in 1942 and his wife, Florine, in 1964.
He is survived by his two daughters: Mrs. Paul Greenberg of Minneapolis, Minn., and Nancy Thorn of Eagle Grove; one grandson, Chad Greenberg; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Otis Thorn, one sister, Mary, Mrs. Charles Peterson.
Scriptural rosary was recited 8:00 p.m. Friday, December 18 at the Wilson Funeral Home. Requiem mass was held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Eagle Grove, with Father E. W. Lechtenberg celebrant. Interment was held in Calvary Cemetery.
