Mrs. Neal (Joan) Smith of Emmetsburg, 20, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Jan. 6, at the Palo Alto County Memorial Hospital in Emmetsburg where she was taken after becoming suddenly ill.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the United Methodist Church at Renwick with the Rev. Donald Glazier officiating. Burial was in the Goldfield Cemetery at Goldfield, the Geilenfeld-Schaaf-McCullough Funeral Service of Algona in charge of the arrangements.

Pallbearers were Dean Gerry, Richard Black, Jeff Allen, Gary Jobe, Allen Helmke and Terry Schmidt.

Joan Frances Smith was born at Fort Dodge on Oct. 7, 1953, daughter of Donald and Frances Smith Peterson. She attended school at Renwick and was graduated from Bonne-Valley High School in the spring of 1971.

She was married to Neal Smith of Algona on Nov. 27, 1971 and the couple lived in Centerville, So. Dakota for a time while her husband completed his college at the University of So. Dakota at Vermillion. The Smiths had more recently moved to Emmetsburg where he is with the Police Department. Mrs. Smith was expecting their first child at the time of her death.

Surviving besides her husband are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Peterson of Renwick; two brothers and two sisters, Evelyn Berte, Fort Dodge; E. Eugene Hawk, Ames; Joyce Mulford, Ames and John Hawk of Oaks, No, Dak. Joan is the daughter-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. David Smith of Algona. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America.
