Maria Lejal Mathieu
28 June 1868 --- 24 April 1920

On Saturday, April 24th, at her home on 417 E. First St., occurred the death of Mrs. Louis Mathieu. Mrs. Mathieu had been the victim of several attacks of bronchitis during the past two years and could not sustain the ravages caused by an attack at influenza in February.

Funeral services were held from the Sacred Heart church Tuesday morning, at 9:00, Father Nolan celebrating mass. Interment was in Calvary cemetery.

Mrs. Mathieu was in the prime of life and tho she had been in poor health for an extended period, her passing is a cause of sincere grief to the family and to her many good friends and it is a severe blow to her husband and children.

She is survived by her husband and seven children, Gabrielle, Margaret, Paul, Lewis, Gertrude, Rene, and Robert.

Marie Lejal was born at Granges, a picturesque village in the Vosges mountains, France, June 28, 1868. She became wife and companion of Louis Mathieu, April 7, 1887. Mr. and Mrs. Mathieu with their four children, Gabrielle, Marguerite, Paul, and Louis came to Iowa in 1903. At Eagle Grove, where they made their home were born Gertrude, Robert, and Rene.

Here Mrs. Mathieu spent 17 years beloved by her family who will miss the first lost from their midst. She was always satisfied and contented and found the kindness of her new friends such that she never regretted having left her native land. She practiced the maxims she taught, "Love and Charity". In the true sense of the word, she was "wife", "mother", and "friend".

Mr. and Mrs. Camille Vilmain and son, Joseph, and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Congotelli, of Sterling, Ills., Mrs. M. Ringstad, and Mrs. A. Olson of Ellsworth attended the funeral services of Mrs. Mathieu from out of town.
