Verna LaVonne (Whetsler) Xanders Nelson (1918-1990)

Verna LaVonne Whetsler was born on March 11, 1918, the daughter of Charles F. and Nellie J. Johnson Whetsler, at Amsterdam Township, rural Kanawha. She received her education in rural Kanawha schools, and graduated in 1935.

She was united in marriage to Glen "Mike" Xanders of Kanawha, in 1944. The couple moved to Eagle Grove following their marriage. Mr. Xanders died in 1965.

She spent her working life as a cook, preparing the daily meals for the residents at the Rotary Ann Nursing Home in Eagle Grove, and retired from there in 1980.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Esther Circle, the V.F.W. Auxiliary, and the Eagle Grove Senior Citizens.

Verna Xanders-Nelson died at the Story City Hospital, Story City, on September 30, 1990, at the age of 72 years, six months, and 19 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband. She is survived by one son, Jerry, Norwalk; one brother, Gerald Whetsler, Springfield, Mo.; two sisters, Doris Berns, Springfield, Mo.; and Mildred Todd of Costa Mesa, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a. m. on October 6, at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove, with the Rev. Scott C. Hall officiating. Burial was in the Glenwood Cemetery, Goldfield. The Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
