Charles Peter Smith
4 April 1887 --- 29 October 1952

Charles P., oldest son of Peter and Margaret [Metz] Kemp Smith, was born April 4, 1887 in Eagle Grove, Iowa, and passed away at the Mercy hospital in Fort Dodge, Iowa, October 29, 1952 after a short illness, having suffered a cerebral hemorrhage while at his work Saturday evening, October 25th.

Charles was raised in Eagle Grove and spent his entire life here attending the Sacred Heart grade and high schools. His early training was in and he remained a faithful member of the Catholic Church throughout his entire life. For many years he was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

On September 30, 1909 he was united in marriage to Cora Uhr of Eagle Grove, Iowa and to this union nine children, four daughters and five sons were born, seven of whom survive.

Those surviving besides his wife, Cora, are Mildred, now Mrs. Ralph I. Bell of Des Moines, Iowa; Charlotte, now Mrs. Franklin J. Brown of Dover, N. J.; Miss Gloria C. Smith of Des Moines, Iowa; Virgil of Goldfield; Merle of Boone; Roger and Darwin of Eagle Grove. There are also 12 grandchildren, one sister, Margaret and two brothers, William and Peter, all of Eagle Grove. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Marceline, and one son, Russell, his parents and two brothers, Louis in infancy and George who died last December 10th.

Charles Smith was one of the pioneer businessmen of Eagle Grove. He was a meat cutter by trade and was very well liked by those with whom he dealt. His sense of humor endeared him to his customers, and it could be said of him, "to have a friend, one must be a friend" really applied. He will be greatly missed in his home, in his neighborhood, and on the streets of Eagle Grove. His service was a tribute as such a large number called to pay their last respect and to attend his final rites.

Services were held Monday morning at 9:30 o'clock at the Sacred Heart church with Father Maurice A. Mullan officiating and interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery at Eagle Grove, Iowa.
