Joseph Benjamin Gunderson
11 August 1898 --- 29 July 1967

Joseph Benjamin Gunderson was born August 11, 1898 at Eagle Grove to Ole F. and Maddell Hammer Gunderson. He was baptized on September 11, 1898 in Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran church and confirmed in the same church on March 16, 1913. He died at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Dodge, on Saturday morning July 29, 1967 after reaching the age of 68 years, 11 months, and 18 days.

He was a resident of Eagle Grove all of his life and received his schooling in the Eagle Grove schools. He was a member of the 168th infantry machine gun company, Rainbow Division, and was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart during World War I. He later worked for both the Chicago Northwestern and the Chicago Great Western Railroads, in a cigar store, and later was auditor for the State Tax Commission for 23 years, retiring at the age of 65. Aon April 2, 1927 he married Cora Mabel Larson at Eagle Grove. He was a lifetime member of the Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran church and had been justice of peace for several years.

Those who preceded him in death were his parents; 2 brothers, George and Clarence, and 1 sister, Martha, Mrs. William Midland. Those who mourn his departure are his wife, Cora, his brother, Oscar of Detroit, Michigan.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 1, 1967 at Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran Church, Rev. H. W. Scholler in charge. Interment in Rose Hill cemetery.
