A former Eagle Grove woman and her three-and-a-half-year-old daughter drowned in a double tragedy in Crawford Park in Fort Dodge Wednesday afternoon.

Dead are Mrs. Joe Madson, 22, of Webster City and her daughter, Christy. Mrs. Madson is the former Kathye MacKay, a 1962 graduate of the Eagle Grove Community High School. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Archie MacKay.

Mrs. Madson and Christy had gone to Fort Dodge Wednesday along with a neighbor in Webster City, Mrs. Gerald Dingman, and her two daughters, Brenda, 9, and Bonnie, 8.

They were in the park located on the north edge of Fort Dodge when Christy reportedly fell into Soldier's Creek in about three and a half feet of water. The spot where she fell in is just above a roadway where a 16-inch pipe carries water under the road.

Mrs. Madson, considered an expert swimmer, dove into the water after her daughter but the girl apparently was sucked into the pipe and her mother right behind her. The lower end of the pipe was partially blocked by rocks and the bodies of the two victims were held in the pipe for about an hour and 40 minutes while police, firemen, and city workers used jackhammers and digging equipment to clear the lower end of the pipe.

The tragedy occurred between 2:00 and 2:30 p.m.

Funeral services are pending at Sandvig Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Madson is survived by a sister, Sharon (Mrs. Robert Metcalf) of Southport, Ind. and a brother, Charles, of Eagle Grove.

The Madsons were planning to move to Charles City on July 28 where Mr. Madson was to begin a new job.
