Walter I. Thorn
27 June 1895 --- 25 July 1990

Walter I. Thorn was born on June 27, 1895, the son of Lemuel and Beele Erma Brooks Thorn in Wright County. He received his education in the Eagle Grove school system. On February 12, 1912, Walter was united in marriage to Clara Gertrude Hill of Holmes, at Clarion. The couple made their home in Eagle Grove. He enlisted in the Iowa National Guard in 1918, and received his honorable discharge in 1920, having obtained the rank of Pvt. 1st Class. He was employed by the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad for 45 years, and also was a longtime fireman for the City of Eagle Grove. He was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Iowa Fireman's Association, and the Railroad Employees Union.

Walter Thorn died at the Clarion Care Center, Clarion, at the age of 95 years, and 28 days, on July 25, 1990. He was preceded in death by his wife in February of this year; his parents; seven brothers; one sister; and a daughter, Viola Willett; two grandsons, Clifford Thorn and Jimmy Chapman, a granddaughter, Bobbette Thorn, and one great-granddaughter, Nikki Russell. He is survived by two sons, Clifford, Eagle Grove; and Bobbie, West Covina, Calif; four daughters, Vivian Chapman, Des Moines; Mrs. Marley (Anita) Griffith, Eagle Grove; Mrs. Alfred (Virginia) Anderson, Eagle Grove, and Mrs. Merle (Beverly) Askvig, Woolstock; 19 grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren; and 11 great-greatgrandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on July 28 at the Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lyle Peters officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. The Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home, Eagle Grove, was in charge of arrangements.
