Gloria Coleen Smith

Gloria C. Smith, daughter of Charles P. and Clara Mae Uhr Smith, was born in Eagle Grove August 15, 1925 and died very suddenly Monday evening, Oct. 28 enroute to a hospital in Des Moines.

She graduated from Eagle Grove high school with the class in 1943. After graduation she was afflicted with rheumatic fever which resulted in an enlarged heart. For some time, she was incapacitated and later was employed as receptionist at the Wilson Funeral Chapel.

She went to Des Moines serving as legislative clerk for Mr. Wilson when he became representative for Wright County. She remained in Des Moines first working as a typist for Farm Bureau then went to Sargents. In 1949 she again served as legislative clerk and immediately after this session was employed by the Iowa State Conservation Commission, in whose employ she has since remained. At the time of her death, she was acting as assistant audit clerk.

Gloria is survived by four brothers and two sisters: Virgil and Roger of Eagle Grove, Merle and Darwin of Des Moines, Mrs. Ralph D. (Mildred) Bell and Mrs. Franklin J. (Charlotte) Brown, both of Santa Ana, California. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles P. and Cora Mae Smith and one sister, Marceline and an infant brother, Russell.

Gloria and Darwin have made their home together in Des Moines for the past ten years.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1 at the Westover Funeral Home in Des Moines, after which the body lay in state Friday evening and Saturday morning at the Kastler Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Final services were conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational church with interment at Rose Hill cemetery.
