John Adolph Gustafson
25 October 1875 ---- 18 July 1960

John A. Gustafson, son of Oscar and Mina Gustafson, was born in Sweden on Oct. 25, 1875 and died Monday July 18th, 1960 at the Soldier's Home in Marshalltown, having attained the age of 84 years, 8 months, and 23 days.

After coming to the United States with his parents, his childhood and early youth was spent in and around Rockford, Ill.

During the Spanish American War period he enlisted for three years in the United States Army (Regulars) and re-enlisted on Aug. 30th, 1901 at Rockford, Ill., for another three-year period, being honorably discharged from the service of the United States on the 29th of Aug. 1904 by reason of expiration of term of service.

As far as is known he came to Iowa shortly after his discharge and was a blacksmith here for several years, also worked in a garage.

On June 7th, 1924 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Neva Griffith of this city. Mrs. Neva Gustafson preceded him in death on Oct. 24, 1943. Mr. Gustafson was a member of the United Spanish War Veterans Charles T. Brown Camp No. 9 of Ft. Dodge and also a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of Eagle Grove.

Due to his older years he decided to enter the Soldier's home in Marshalltown. He entered in 1953 and has since resided there.

Funeral services were held from the Kastler Funeral Home Thursday p.m. at 2 o'clock with the Rev. T. M. Walton of the Goldfield Christian Church officiating. The Odd Fellows held a memorial service on Wednesday evening at the Kastler Funeral Home.
